Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Theodore Roosevelt National Park
@anitheadventurer
Theodore Roosevelt National Park is a stunning and diverse landscape that honors to the conservation efforts of the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. The park is divided into three units: the North Unit, the South Unit, and the Elkhorn Ranch Unit. The park is known for its rugged badlands, mixed-grass prairies, and abundant wildlife. It features colorful rock formations, deep canyons, and rolling hills that offer a glimpse into the natural beauty of the American Great Plains. Wildlife thrives in the park, including bison, wild horses, elk, deer, prairie dogs, and numerous bird species. The North Unit is characterized by its more rugged and remote terrain, offering trails and viewpoints that showcase the unique badlands landscape. The South Unit is more accessible and visited, featuring the Painted Canyon with its vibrant layers of rock. This is where I spent my time when I visited. The Elkhorn Ranch Unit, located between the North and South units, preserves the site where Theodore Roosevelt had his ranch and spent time in the wilderness.

An Anecdote

Not every European would jump at the opportunity to visit "middle America," but when Anna reached out to me on Instagram, I was excited to show off a few of the lesser visited National Parks.

I met Anna in Toronto.  I gave her and a friend a ride from Toronto to Niagra Falls.  We hung out for the day and parted ways, exchanging Instagram handles as a way to stay in touch.  A few weeks later, Anna said she was extending her trip and wanted to visit some other parts of the US.  She asked if I was open to a road-trip companion for a few weeks.  I said, "sure, why not?"

I picked Anna up in Bismarck and we ended up spending two weeks together, exploring national parks, sleeping out of my tent, and meeting biker groups (I will save that story for another post!).

We were both blown away by the simple beauty of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We saw different types of wildlife for the first time, hiked unique terrain, and made lasting memories together.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Welcome to my (and hopefully our) adventures! I have lived all over the United States, and I have a passion for the outdoors and budget-travel. My style of travel is easy-going, yet filled with adventure and excitement. I focus on connecting with people and community, as well as immersing myself in the outdoors as much as possible. Finding a balance between these two have led to some amazing memories, and I cannot wait to share them with you. Most recently, I lived in my car for over seven months, while I visited every National Park in the lower 48. I hiked, camped, met amazing people, and hiked some more. I got to experience the parks like a local, because I had no timetable, no flights to catch, no rental car to return, etc. Some parks I stayed only for a few hours, and others for over a week. I chatted with park rangers, stayed with people that lived nearby, and camped with others at some amazing campsites. The travel guides I share give you an "insider" look at the national park, with tips for the best hikes, tricks for finding campsites (but I always include hotel options too), as well as information about the various aspects of the parks. I hope that you will use these guides as tools to fuel your next national park adventure!
