Northern Michigan

Northern Michigan

Leslie & Matt
A part of our elemental nature means moving with Mother Nature. While living in a van without temperature control for heat, it was natural for us to move north - we found ourselves in Northern Michigan. Michigan was a dream weather-wise and we also found a sense of belonging with old friends, new friends, family, and ourselves. We visited so many beautiful local establishments & found new places for running & cycling adventures. Check out our top recommendations & favorite spots for each city we made our way through. Share your recommendations for our next visit if you have them, we'll add them to our ever-growing list!

Petoskey Places

We spent the majority of our time in Petoskey and wow! It was the perfect summer spot for weather, friends, food, and all the things. Our top activities included playing bingo at the local Crooked Lake Yahct Club, cycling 20 miles & having donuts afterwards, taking a boatride to lunch with new & old friends, and watching the sunrise each morning over the lake. We also used our new kayak for the first time, tried stand up paddle, and built a bike rack for the back of the van.

We came to an impasse with our business & lifestyle and how it correlates to our original "why" - we realized we needed to redo (again) how we are structuring our days, our work, and ourselves. That's one thing about #vanlife, once we feel like we've gotten somewhere, we're still on the way. But isn't that a beautiful thing?

Check out our top recs from Petoskey - these are all a must-visit!

Mackinaw & Soo Places

We stayed in Mackinaw at a KOA for a couple of nights to catch up on work, laundry, and to visit some of Matt's Family in Ste. St. Marie for a day-trip. We took advantage of a rail to trail adjacent to our campsite and also visited the International Dark Sky Park down the street.

Oxford Places

We visited Oxford, Michigan, to do a Spartan Race - it was 6.2ish miles with 25 obstacles, and was the first time we used the van to shower in a parking lot. We had all intentions of preparing salads for dinner but found a local pizza place to visit instead. We stayed with a Harvest Host and had a peaceful two nights in the woods. I wouldn't have made Oxford a destination in itself, but if you're in the area, you must stop for ice cream at Eva's. Matt HIGHLY recommends the Puppy Chow & Leslie says go with the classics you love :)
