This guide is designed for a days walking around Marseille, however if steps aren't your goal there are some excursions listed at the bottom of this guide which require a lot less walking
It is likely that your Cruise ship will dock quite far out of the town, the port at Marseille is large!Ā Take advantage of any shuttles offered which will drop you off much more centrally.
I have set the guide out in such a way that the more energetic part of the walk is done first, and earlier so it isn't too warm.Ā Ā
Our first stop is the impressive Basilica of Notre Dame of La Garde- its s steep but beautiful walk up from the town centre, taking in quintessential French architecture at every turn.Ā The Basilica is perched high above the city, offering breathtaking views of the coastline.
When you come to leave my advice would be to walk down Montee de l'Oratoire and head to sepia for a well deserved lunch (or just a coffee!)
Continue to amble your way down to the port take time to walk along the front and admire the many beautiful boats on display, on the way you can take it great views of the Fort
L'Ombriere is often bustling with street performers and craft stalls, the mirrored ceiling definitely has to be seen.
Off the sides to the port are many charming little squares, with boutique cafes and coffee shops, nice little shops and you can certainly lose a few hours meandering through the streets taking in the below notable sights
Where to eat?
I've already mentioned earlier in the guide to try Sepia, however I have some further recommendations for you, Marseille has an array of delicious food to try and bakeries all over- you certainly will not go hungry
If you don't want such an energetic day....
Check out some of the below tours, I thoroughly recommend booking in advance as they can get busy, as they tend to work out more cost effective that Cruise ship excursions,
If you are wanting to head further out from Marseille there are some amazing options for all kinds of activities- my favourites IĀ have listed below
I hope this guide has been useful for you- I have written many others based on Port days in the Mediterranean- they are listed on my profile or linked at the bottom of this page
