Lassen Volcanic National Park Guide

Lassen Volcanic National Park Guide

Exploring Somewhere
Lassen Volcanic National Park is one of California's more underrated national parks. Lassen is home to spectacular hydrothermal features, stunning mountain lakes, wildflower filled meadows, and of course volcanos. Located in northeastern California at the crossroads of the Cascade and Sierra Nevada Mountain Ranges, Lassen is subject to high snowfall in the winter, making late spring through early fall the best time of year to visit. This map highlights the best stops along Lassen Volcanic National Park Highway, the main road through the park, from South to North. The entire route is about 30 miles, and without stopping the entire route takes about an hour to complete. Also included are a few stops at the Butte Lake entrance, however to get here you must drive along 6 miles of unpaved road. This map also details some of the best and more popular hikes in Lassen.

Sulphur Works
@exploringsomewhere
Less than a mile from the visitor center is the first of the hydrothermal features within Lassen. You can smell the sulfur in the air and see the steam rising from the vents below the viewpoint.

Emerald Lake
@exploringsomewhere
This stunning and appropriately named emerald colored mountain lake gets its green color from the vegetation growing in the shallow water.

Bumpass Trailhead
@exploringsomewhere
Arguably the best trail in Lassen, the Bumpass Hell Trail is a 3 mile out-and-back trail that leads you to the largest area of geothermal features in the park. Bumpass Hell also contains boardwalks that allow you to safely get closer to the steam vents and boiling pools.

Lake Helen
@exploringsomewhere
This gorgeous lake is one of the best photo spots - the crystal blue water with the often snow-capped Lassen Peak in the background is truly a beautiful site. In the warmer months you can also swim in the lake, though the water remains frigid year-round

Lassen Peak Trailhead
@exploringsomewhere
Lassen Peak is the world's largest plug dome volcano. This 5 mile, strenuous out and back hike requires you to climb just under 2,000 feet in elevation to reach the peak. Those not up to the challenge may also want to hike the first 1.3 miles of the trail up to Grandview Point as this portion of the trail is not as steep.

Upper Kings Creek Meadow
@exploringsomewhere
Lassen is known for some of the best stargazing in California, and this meadow is arguably the best place in the park to do so. In the summer the meadow is also filled with wildflowers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Exploring Somewhere
Hi there! We're Shawn and Kelly, welcome to our page! After a semester studying abroad in Europe, I (Kelly) fell in love with traveling, but also with the art of planning trips. With limited time in each country I visited, I took pride in my ability to research and curate the perfect 2-5 day trips that hit all the major landmarks while also incorporating other activities that myself or my friends would enjoy to make our trips that much more special. About 2 years ago we moved from the east coast to start our adventure in Los Angeles, and fell in love with the beautiful state of California. Since then we've been able to make the most our passion for traveling, adventuring, and exploring the outdoors. As a work from home game designer and a travel physical therapist, we have been able to spend a lot of our free time enjoying all that California has to offer. From the numerous national parks to the iconic coastlines and beach towns, we've become well versed in how to make the most of any day in CA. We've also been slowly making our way through our bucket list of other destinations, both here and abroad. As adventure enthusiasts we are constantly looking forward to our next trip, and due to our somewhat limited time off we're also passionate about making the most of each day we have. We love to inspire others to get out and travel, and are happy to be able to share our knowledge and itineraries to help make that possible!
