It's impossible not to have seen this film at least once in your life! If you are a musical lover or simply curious about the 70s and 80s, you must admire the music of ABBA and the musical "Mamma Mia!". After the great cinematic success, there was a real tourist boom, called "the Mamma Mia effect" where everyone wondered where the beautiful island where the musical was filmed was located. Plot

The story begins on the Greek island of Kalokairi, which does not actually exist, and tells of Sophie Sheridan (Amanda Seyfriend), about to marry Sky (Dominic Cooper), and her mother, Donna Sheridan (Meryil Streep), owner of the hotel “Villa Donna” and very little eager to talk to her daughter about her past and her real father. However, Sophie's desire and curiosity are too great and she therefore decides to read her mother's diary from the time, discovering the identity of her mother's three boyfriends: Harry (Colin Firth), Bill (Stellan Skarsgaard) and Sam (Pierce Brosnan). She then decides to invite them to the wedding, keeping her mother in the dark about her idea of her. The three receive the invitation and go together to the island of Kalokairi, where Donna and her daughter live.

Locations

Skópelos

With a narrow and elongated shape and known as the greenest island in all of Greece, Skópelos is part of the Sporades Archipelago, and is a true earthly paradise with its endless pine forests, its ancient Orthodox churches, its houses white and its incredible beaches surrounded by high rocks and thick Mediterranean vegetation. This island is so beautiful that it almost seems otherworldly, and it is no coincidence that it is here that most of the scenes of Mamma Mia were filmed!

Kastani Beach
@wanderlust_travelandiscover
Located about 20 km from Skópelos town, Kastani beach is the most famous on the island and, thanks to “Mamma mia!” it has become one of the most visited tourist destinations in the Sporades Archipelago, with daily tours departing from the center of Skópelos and all the nearby islands. Kastani was the set of three of the most emblematic songs of the film: “Lay all your love on me” (sung by Sophie and her fiancé Sky), “Does your mother know” (performed by Tanya to block the advances of the young barman met on the beach) and “I have a dream” (the beautiful song sung by the two protagonists at the end of the film as they leave Kalokairi Island).

Another unforgettable location that deserves to be mentioned is Glysteri Beach, about 15 km north of Skópelos Town, the only access point to the path that leads to the famous arch with the sign of the hotel managed by Sophie and his mother: Villa Donna. However, the bow, specially created for the film, is not present as it disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

@wanderlust_travelandiscover
Located about an hour's drive north-east from Skópelos, the church of Agios Ioànnis Kastri is a scenic Orthodox church that stands on a high rock surrounded by the sea and can be reached by climbing a challenging staircase of 105 steps. Probably the most famous and visited location of “Mamma mia!” This small church is the site of Sophie and Sky's near-wedding, and Meryl Streep's dramatic stage for her performance of "The winner takes it all."

Skiathos

The island of Skiàthos is also part of the Sporades Archipelago and is the most famous and visited island in the Aegean Sea thanks to its proximity to the mainland which facilitates connection. Only 12 km long and 9 km wide, this tiny island has almost sixty beaches, all characterized by fine golden sand and crystal clear waters, numerous evocative monasteries, some museums and even a fortress. Its fame is also linked to the lively nightlife that Skiáthos Town offers to younger people, transforming the historic center of the city into an open-air nightclub.

Agios Nikolaos Church

Another enchanting place used in the film is the clock tower of the church of Agios Nikolaos, where Sophie goes to post the invitations for her wedding guided by the notes of "I have a dream".

Skiathos Old Port
@wanderlust_travelandiscover
This bay, which has been the city's port since ancient times, now hosts excursion and fishing boats and some yachts. The part in front of the port is full of taverns, cafes and bars, many of which have undergone a transformation in the hands of the set designers of Mamma Mia, who furnished them with traditional signs, colored tablecloths and umbrellas. Here Sam (Pierce Brosnan) and Harry (Colin Firth) arrive late and miss the ferry to Kalokairi but fortunately Bill (Stellan Skarsgard) is there and offers them a lift on the Fernando; the same goes for Donna's friends, Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski), who embark on a wooden fishing boat with the locals towards Kalokairi.

The small town of Damouhari is located on the Pelion peninsula, about 60 km from Volos in mainland Greece. It is a very picturesque village, surrounded by splendid natural landscapes in which there is the only natural port on the entire coast of Pelion used in the film as the set for the Kalokairi Port and for the sequence with the "Dancing Queen" group dance .

If you are planning a trip to discover the Sporades islands I recommend you read the complete guide on Skopelos

You will certainly have heard of Skopelos, it is one of the most beautiful Greek islands, so photogenic that it was used as a set for the film "Mamma Mia", the famous Abba musical! Skopelos is a small pearl nestled between the tourist Skiathos, which has now become the main destination of the Sporades Islands, and Alonissos, more private and quiet and is a perfect mix between the two. This balance perhaps makes it one of the most beautiful and evocative islands in all of Greece for several reasons: It is one of the most lush Greek islands, with forests that practically reach all the way to the sea; the nightlife, although not as wild as Skiathos, is well organized and finally its small size allows it to be explored by car, scooter but also on foot. If you are looking for a perfect summer escape, Skopelos is the perfect place. With its breathtaking nature, its hidden beaches and its unspoiled charm, this island will amaze anyone.
