General Tips

Peak tourist season is between December and April when the weather is drier. Alternatively, May or June will be slightly warmer, but the transitioning seasons will make the experience unique and the country greener.

Day 1 (Option 1)

Juan Santamaría International Airport
@noelkantz

Details

Upon landing, feel free to spend some time exploring the nation's capital city. But make haste because it's ~2 hours to the next destination and the activities start at 7am.

Timing depends on arrival, but will be assumed in accordance with my own trip, which arrived late at night. If you arrive earlier, then consider paying a visit to San Jose's premiere shopping destination: Santana Row. With over 50 shops and 30 restaurants, there's something for everyone.

Hotel Cayuga
@noelkantz
This hotel is within walking distance of the launch point for tomorrow's Tortuga Island Tour, but other hotels may also provide transportation to the boats if you want to save time.

Find nightly accomodations in the peninsula town of Puntarenas in preparation for the next day's activity.

Day 1 (Option 2)

Upon leaving San Jose, head further south to the town of Jaco. Serving as a gateway to national parks, Jaco will have more varying activities to offer than Puntarenas but it is slightly further from the rest of the trip's itinerary. Since the next day's activity departs from both Day 1 options, the decision is all about preference and timing.

Day 2

Isla Tortuga
@noelkantz
It's an extensive journey from the bay to the island via boat, between 30-60 minutes. Proceed with caution if susceptible to sea sickness.

Details

Guides will escort you via boat to Tortuga Island, where you can enjoy crystal blue waters perfect for snorkeling.  The excursion will take several hours, and tour companies will generally provide meals.  In addition to water activities, the island hosts gorgeous hiking views.

Upon returning to the mainland, you'll have some time before sundown. Relax or catch a head start to your next destination, the choice is yours.

Day 3

The Original Canopy Tour Monteverde
@noelkantz
Add to
Details

Explore the jungle in this canopy tour located in Monteverde. Rope swing, zip line, and rappelling your way through the trees. Take home a souvenir photo to brag to all your friends! Reserve a few hours for this excursion.

After the canopy tour, head to town and refuel. For a unique experience, consider the San Lucas Treetop Dining Experience.

San Lucas Treetop Dining Experience
@noelkantz
Reservations required. A unique experience in the trees with dining in fully enclosed glass down. Spectacular views and creatively-presented dishes make this a once in a lifetime experience. With the offer of 9-course meals, opportunity to taste local cuisine is abundant, and backdropped by the Nicoya Gulf and the nearby rainforest.

For the travelers on a smaller budget, consider Tree House Restaurante and enjoy the atmosphere of a restaurant built around a massive Higuerón tree!

Day 4

Parque Nacional Volcán Tenorio
@noelkantz
Although the hike can be completed privately, it is still required to buy a pass. While wifi is available, it is spotty and recommending to reserve ahead of time. Expect to walk ~3.5 miles to and from the falls.

Famous for the Rio Celeste, this national park also features hot springs, wildlife, hiking trails, and its namesake: the Tenorio Volcano. The minerals from two rivers converge to create a bright blue hue clashed with the normal shades of a river. It's a unique, picturesque sight that'll make your trip forever memorable.

Whenever you decide to wave farewell to Rio Celeste, as hard as it might be, head over to La Fortuna. But don't worry, you won't be sad for long. Imagine waking up in the morning, stepping outside and setting eyes on the towering natural beauty of a volcano. You won't have to, this will be your home for the next few nights in an airbnb available for reservation with clear view of the majestic Arenal.

Acuarelas del Arenal
@noelkantz
This AirBnB offers instructions for entry far in advance, allowing for late arrival. Perfect for allowing the time to fully experience Costa Rica. It's ~15 min walk into town, and close proximity to pick up/drop off points for the next couple excursions.

Day 5

Safari Float - Peñas Blancas
@noelkantz
Depending on the hosting company, you may even witness Costa Rican customs and taste local cuisine after the tour. Most companies will pick up and drop off at hotels and escort you to the river. Recommended time slot is 730am, but available at 2pm as well.

Enjoy a water safari through the animal sanctuary of the Penas Blancas River. Discover a great many species such as Sloths, Monkeys, Crocodiles, and Jesus Christ Lizard. Your choice of kayak or raft.

In the afternoon, head across town to Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park where you can observe the wildlife and explore the rainforest from suspended walkways. Maybe some of the wildlife will even join you!

It's been a busy day! Head home and rest up for tomorrow's activities.

Day 6

Arenal Volcano
@noelkantz
Guide recommended. There are poisonous creatures sometimes on the trail, deadly to those unaware or unfamiliar with the local species'. Some guides will even combine the volcano hike with the next activity.

It's time to a hike a volcano! Trek the rainforest at the base of Arenal. Go with a tour company to hear all about the ecosystem and wildlife.

El Choyin
@noelkantz
Because it's free, it's one of the more popular attractions in the region. Come very early, or very late. Otherwise, be prepared for crowds, and be wary of parking scams. There is no official parking, but off-road parking is available.
Add to
Details

Grab some lunch then head over to bathe in Hot Springs! Unfortunately, many 'natural' hot springs are part of resorts, but El Choyin is hidden just outside Tabacon Resort and open to the public.

Hit the road and head southeast toward San Jose and the largest butterfly conservatory in the world. Featuring an aviary, 5 gorgeous waterfalls, a collection of flora and exotic species, the Nature Park also offers an all you can buffet allowing you to enjoy the whole day exploring its collection and several hiking trails.

If you'd like to add a day to the itinerary, night accomodation is available at the Nature Park and almost exactly in the middle of two national parks. It is also only a couple hours from San Jose.

Day 8

Juan Santamaría International Airport
@noelkantz

Details

It's been an eventful and memorable week, but it can't last forever. Head back down to San Jose. Explore the city if you have a later flight, otherwise board a plane home.
