Ensuring the safety of your vehicle is paramount before embarking on your road trip adventure. Conduct a thorough vehicle inspection, checking tire pressure, fluid levels, brakes, lights, and the battery to ensure everything is in good working condition. Prioritize securing all loose items inside the car to prevent them from becoming projectiles around corners or sudden stops. If you have any doubts about the durability of your vehicle, consider renting one from Turo or a similar company. In the event of breakdowns, you won't be responsible for transporting the car back to ID/UT; instead, you'll have the flexibility to rent another and continue your journey—a strategy my boyfriend and I found invaluable during our own road trip. Safety first ensures peace of mind as you hit the open road.

While optional, we highly recommend it as a must-visit stop for anyone traveling through the area, offering a unique opportunity to experience the beauty and history of the Oregon Trail firsthand. While it may not be the cheapest option in town, the incredible ambiance and delicious fare make it well worth the money. My boyfriend and I make it a point to visit every time we're in Twin Falls. Take advantage of exploring the shops and city, as the next few days will lead you further into the boonies, away from urban amenities.

For the next two locations, feel free to visit on either day two or day three, depending on what suits you best. Personally, I found the hot springs particularly enchanting at night. However, it's worth noting that depending on the time of your visit, the pool may not be open. Therefore, I recommend checking for hours and availability in advance to avoid any disappointment. I'm mentioning this now to ensure you're well-informed and can plan accordingly for your trip.

Although I have fond memories of rafting here as a kid, we didn't have the chance to do it during our road trip because we visited in the off-season. Nonetheless, I highly recommend it for anyone traveling during the summer months. Our Decision:
After a delightful evening in Salt Lake City, I highly recommend staying for the night, especially considering the extensive driving planned for the next day. We found a wonderful place to stay in the Avenues neighborhood, right in the city center. The location was ideal, offering easy access to downtown attractions and restaurants. However, we couldn't help but wonder about the breathtaking views that could be found in the upper Avenues or Federal Heights, overlooking the city below. Renting a place higher up on the hill would not only offer stunning vistas but also provide a welcome escape from the smog that often blankets Utah's valleys. The unfortunate reality is that smog can be a significant issue in the Salt Lake City area, particularly during winter inversions when cold air becomes trapped beneath warm air, leading to a buildup of pollution. By staying higher up in the hills, we hoped to minimize our exposure to smog and maximize our enjoyment of the city's natural beauty. Overall, while our stay in the Avenues was delightful, we couldn't help but imagine the added charm and tranquility of renting a place in the upper Avenues or Federal Heights, where we could savor the stunning views and escape the haze of urban pollution.

This was probably my boyfriend's favorite part of the whole trip. For someone who doesn't care too much for history, it can go very quickly. However, for someone who likes artifacts and historical references, you could be here for hours trying to decipher the meanings of the drawings and also how the people got to the heights they did before tractors or cranes existed. These ancient rock carvings, created by Native American peoples thousands of years ago, depict a variety of symbols, figures, and scenes that hold significance to the indigenous peoples who once inhabited the area. The panels showcase intricate designs ranging from geometric patterns to depictions of animals, human figures, and celestial bodies, providing valuable insights into the beliefs, customs, and daily life of the ancient inhabitants of the region. Visitors to Capitol Reef National Park can marvel at these remarkable petroglyphs and reflect on the rich cultural heritage preserved within the park's rugged landscapes. Despite the long and rough drive, especially at night, seasoned backroad travelers will find it worth the journey. Situated on a vast property owned by the same family for nearly a century, the site offers stunning views of the Colorado River and Canyonlands National Park. If you're looking for a truly special and remote retreat, this is it. The accommodation includes a full bathroom off the main dwelling, and guests have access to explore the entirety of the property during the day. Other must-see attractions include the fiery hues of the Windows Section, the massive Landscape Arch, and the surreal formations at Devil's Garden. With numerous hiking trails ranging from easy strolls to challenging treks, there's something for every adventurer. And as the sun sets, the park transforms into a canvas of vibrant colors, making for an unforgettable experience. The park is open 24/7, 365 days a year. However, if you are arriving in peak season, we would advise arriving as early as possible - to us, this is arriving around 6am, but to each their own. Be prepared for long lines to enter the park, particularly in summer and spring, which can be upwards of three hours. However, visiting in early December, my boyfriend and I found no lines at all, making it extremely easy to find parking and enjoy the park without massive crowds. We were able to take advantage of this opportunity to capture stunning pictures without interruptions. While you can opt to buy an audio-guided tour, we relied on AllTrails for navigation and had a seamless experience.
