The Ultimate Madrid Guide: 20 Places & Things to Do
1. Retiro Park
Let's start with my absolute favorite place to take my friends and family when they come to visit me in Madrid.
Here, you can lie down in the grass, go for a run, chill with your friends, or rent a boat and go for a paddle on the artificial lake of Retiro. The park offers even more activities like yoga sessions, dance classes, book fairs, and bars to enjoy refreshing drinks.
2. Palacio Cristal
A stunning glass palace located in the heart of Retiro Park, Palacio Cristal is an architectural gem hosting art exhibitions.
3. Gran Vía
Literally meaning 'Great Way', Gran Via is known as the city's main shopping and entertainment hub, Gran Vía is adorned with beautiful architecture, theaters, shops, and bustling activity day and night. You'll find great shopping here along with the Calle Fuencarral.
Plus, most of Madrid's rooftop spots are along this street. We'll talk more about that soon.
4. Plaza Mayor
A historic square where you can soak up the atmosphere, enjoy street performances, and dine at traditional Spanish restaurants.

5. Churros at Chocolateria San Gines
San Gines, Madrid's famous chocolate shop, started serving its delicious chocolate and churros in 1984. Even though there's usually a long line, waiting is totally worth it for this tasty treat. People love it so much that they don't mind waiting to get a taste of their amazing chocolate and churros.
6. Visit Museums
Museo Nacional Del Prado
The Prado Museum is renowned as the world's largest art gallery, showcasing an extensive collection of masterpieces. Home to works by esteemed Spanish painters like Goya, Velazquez, Murillo, and El Greco, among others, it's a treasure trove of artistic brilliance. Among the 1,500 paintings on exhibit, "Las Meninas" by Diego de Velazquez stands out as a quintessential masterpiece, highly regarded by experts in Spanish painting.
Free entry: Monday to Saturday from 18:00 to 20:00 / Sunday from 17:00 to 19:00
Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum
Museum Thyssen Bornemisza is located right in front of the Prado Museum and houses a wonderful private collection of central European painters (Rubens, Rembrandt, Jan Van Eyck, etc.). Its excellent location in the heart of the city makes it one of the flagship museums in Madrid.

Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía
Together with the Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza museums, the Reina Sofia Museum completes Madrid's "Paseo del Arte" or Art Walk. Housing an impressive collection of modern art including works by Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Miró, and more, the Reina Sofia Museum stands out.
While the biggest Picasso Museum in Spain is located in Barcelona, the painter´s most important painting- Guernica is in the Reina Sofía Museum.
Free entry: Monday to Saturday from 19:00 to 21:00 (Tuesday closed) and Sunday: from 13:30 to 19:00
7. Flamenco Show
If your time in Spain is limited with Madrid and you won't be able to make it to Seville, catching a flamenco show is a must! 💃🏻
Flamenco is a fantastic Spanish tradition with passionate music and dance that really shows Spain's spirit. If you want to feel the lively culture and energy in Madrid, watching a flamenco show is a great idea. It's a perfect way to get a real taste of Spain and appreciate its artistic heritage during your stay in Madrid.

9. Templo de Debod
An ancient Egyptian temple relocated to Madrid's Parque del Oeste, offering a serene setting and fantastic views, especially during sunset.
10. Santiago Bernabeu Stadium
Home to Real Madrid, one of the world's most successful football clubs, Santiago Bernabéu Stadium is a must-visit for sports fans. The stadium offers a guided or self-paced tour, where you can explore the pitch, the locker rooms, the trophy room, and even enjoy a panoramic view of the arena. It's a fantastic way to experience the history and glory of this iconic club.

I once took my dad here, and it was such a nice experience—we both really enjoyed the visit.
11. El Rastro
El Rastro is Madrid's most famous flea market, held every Sunday and on public holidays in the La Latina neighborhood. It’s perfect for finding antiques, second-hand goods, unique crafts, and souvenirs. Enjoy the Sunday morning with local snacks from nearby bars.
12. Real Jardín Botánico
Located near the Prado Museum, this botanical garden is a peaceful oasis in the city. Stroll through the beautifully curated plant collections, including rare species, themed gardens, and seasonal flowers. It's a relaxing spot for nature lovers.
13. Night Out
Madrid is known for its lively nightlife. Explore trendy bars, clubs, and live music venues in areas like Chueca, Malasaña, and Huertas. For a true Madrid experience, start late, enjoy tapas with friends, and dance until dawn.

14. Malasaña for Vintage Shopping
Malasaña is the city's bohemian district, packed with vintage shops, quirky boutiques, and retro treasures. Wander through Calle Velarde and Calle Espíritu Santo to find unique clothes, records, and home decor.
15. Puerta de Alcalá
A neoclassical monument located in Plaza de la Independencia, Puerta de Alcalá is one of Madrid’s most iconic landmarks. It’s especially beautiful at night when it’s illuminated, and it’s a perfect photo spot near Retiro Park.
16. Las Ventas, Plaza de Toros
The largest bullfighting arena in Spain, Las Ventas, showcases Spanish architecture and history. While bullfighting is controversial, the venue also hosts concerts and cultural events.
PS: I absolutely do not promote the bullfighting.
17. Palacio Real
The Royal Palace of Madrid is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family, though it’s now used for ceremonies. Explore its opulent rooms, royal gardens, and impressive art collections.
18. Almudena Cathedral
Located next to the Royal Palace, this cathedral features a mix of Gothic, Romanesque, and modern styles. Climb to the dome for stunning views of the city and surrounding mountains.
19. Mercado San Miguel
A touristic food market offering fresh produce, gourmet tapas, and traditional Spanish treats. It’s a great spot to taste local flavors like Iberian ham, paella, and seafood.
Pro tip: For fewer crowds, check out Mercado San Antón.
20. Puerta del Sol
The last but not least, the heart of Madrid, Puerta del Sol is a square with landmarks like the Bear and Tree statue and the clock that marks New Year’s Eve celebrations. It's a lively spot full of energy and perfect for people-watching.
