๐ Day Trips & getaways from Marrakesh
The best seasons to visit Morocco are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) when the weather is pleasant.Avoid summer (July-August) if you're visiting inland areas like Marrakech or the Sahara, as temperatures can exceed 40ยฐC (104ยฐF).
๐ต Currency & Payments
The official currency is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD).Exchange money at official exchange offices or banks. Avoid street exchangers.
Credit cards are widely accepted in big cities, but cash is essential for markets, small restaurants, and taxis.
๐ย Personal safety tips
Morocco is generally safe for tourists, but you should still take precautions:
Pickpocketing: Be mindful of your belongings in busy areas.
Tourist scams: Be cautious with โfriendly localsโ who offer free tours or "helpful advice" at markets.
Women travelers: Dress conservatively and be aware of unwanted attention, especially when traveling alone.
๐ Health & Hygiene
No mandatory vaccinations, but Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccines are recommended.
Drink bottled water and avoid ice in drinks. Street food is delicious, but stick to places with high turnover.
๐ What to Wear
Morocco is a conservative country, especially in rural areas.
Women: Cover shoulders and knees, especially in mosques or traditional neighborhoods.
Men: Avoid shorts in religious sites. In cities like Marrakech and Casablanca, tourists wear modern clothing, but modesty is appreciated.
๐ Transportation in Morocco
Trains: Comfortable and the best way to travel between big cities like Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakech. Check schedules at ONCF.
Buses: Supratours and CTM are the best options for long distances.
Taxis:"Petit taxis" (small taxis) are for short rides within a city. Always ask for the meter or agree on a price beforehand."Grand taxis" (shared taxis) are used for intercity travel.
Car Rental: Driving in Morocco can be chaotic. If you rent a car, drive cautiously.
Private Car + Driver: The best option if you can afford it
๐ Cultural Etiquette
Always ask permission before taking photos of people, especially in rural areas. Tea is a symbol of hospitalityโif offered, it's polite to accept. During Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours out of respect.
Bargaining is a normal and expected practice in souks (markets). Sellers often start with high prices, so offer 50% of the original price and negotiate. Be polite but firm, and walk away if neededโthey might call you back with a better offer.
๐ฝ๏ธ Moroccan Food Basics
Tagine ๐ฒ โ A slow-cooked stew, often made with meat (chicken, lamb, or beef), vegetables, and aromatic spices. Itโs served in the traditional cone-shaped clay pot.

Pastilla ๐ฅง โ A sweet and savory pastry filled with pigeon or chicken, almonds, and cinnamon, wrapped in crispy layers of warqa dough.
Harira ๐ต โ A thick soup made of tomatoes, lentils, chickpeas, and spices, commonly eaten during Ramadan.
Mechoui ๐ โ Slow-roasted lamb, often served at special occasions and known for its tender texture and rich flavor.
Zaalouk & Taktouka ๐ฅ โ Popular vegetable side dishes made with eggplant (zaalouk) or bell peppers and tomatoes (taktouka), served with bread.
โ๏ธ HOW TO GET THERE
By Air
The easiest way to get to Marrakech is by flying into Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK), located just 6 km (approximately 15 minutes by car) from the city center. The airport serves many international and domestic flights, with direct connections from major cities in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
Transportation from the Airport
Taxi: Taxis are available just outside the terminal. Ensure you agree on a price beforehand, as most taxis do not use meters. The cost is typically around 100-150 MAD for a trip to the city center.
Airport Shuttle: There are shuttle buses that run frequently between the airport and popular areas like Jemaa el-Fnaa and Gueliz. These are more budget-friendly.
Private Transfers: Many hotels and riads in Marrakech offer private transfer services. Booking in advance ensures a hassle-free arrival.
By Train
If you're traveling domestically, you can take a train to Marrakech Railway Station, which connects to major cities in Morocco such as Casablanca, Rabat, and Fes. The trains are comfortable, reliable, and an excellent way to enjoy the scenic routes of the country. From Casablanca, the journey takes about 3 hours. From Rabat, it's approximately 4 hours. The railway station is in Gueliz, a modern neighborhood of Marrakech, about 10 minutes from the Medina by taxi.
By Car
Driving to Marrakech offers flexibility, especially if you're exploring Morocco's diverse landscapes.
From Casablanca, take the A7 motorway for about 3 hours.
From Essaouira, it's a scenic 2.5-hour drive via the R207 road. Car rentals are available at the airport and in most major cities, but be prepared for busy traffic in the city center.
- Getting Around Marrakech
Once in Marrakech
The best way to explore the Medina is on foot, as the narrow streets are inaccessible by car.
Use petit taxis (small cabs) for short trips around the city.
For an authentic experience, hop on a calรจche (horse-drawn carriage).
Apps like Careem and Uber also operate in the city for hassle-free rides.ย ย ย
- For longer distances
1. Hire a car + driver to get around, or of you want to travel further. My go to company for this is:
It is advisable not to rent the most basic car, as the roads are not always in good condition, and the curves in the High Atlas can be challenging. A car with good performance is necessaryย ย
