Dog-Friendly Guide to Kotor Bay, Montenegro
Dog-Friendly Guide to Kotor Bay, Montenegro
The Points Plan
This is an absolutely beautiful place on beautiful water, not to mention an UNESCO world heritage site.
If you're here with your dog, I would recommend some early morning walkies to beat the heat in the summer months as well as the traffic. The roads are very narrow and most of the time without sidewalks (depending on where you're staying).
The water is beautiful turquoise blue, cool and most of the time very calm. Perfect for jumping in and cooling off, or just hanging out with your neighbors.

I can personally vouch that the host at this airbnb and her granddaughter were not only dog-friendly, but also actually excited to see our dog! The place was perfect, right on the water and very clean and comfortable.

Activities
Kotor Old City Walls
@thepointsplan
There's so much to see and do within the Old Town. Book a walking tour or just wander the 13th century city streets. The cats of Kotor are considered local residents, so be warned if you're planning to bring your dog along.

Kotor beach
@thepointsplan
One of the best and favorite things to do in Kotor for locals and visitors alike is to swim and enjoy the sun. If your spot doesn't have access to the water, there are a few beach clubs where you can rent a chair.
Do not park in a random drive-way or parking spot and go for a swim. I can almost guarantee you it will be private property and they will tell you to leave.

Top Of The Old Kotor Fort Trail
@thepointsplan
You're going to wake up extra early for this hike (also drive-able). Start your hike early to beat the sun coming over the mountains, but also everyone hopping off the cruise ships. When you get to a fork in the trail (there's an old house that sometimes sells water and snacks) go right if you want to go to the fort, take the switchback left if you just want to continue hiking up.

Franz Joseph Stairs
@thepointsplan
A great hike to take-on in the afternoon! On the opposite side of the Old Town, there is an equally demanding, switch-back hike with beautiful views of the bay, but! this one is mostly shaded in the afternoon which is perfect if you didn't wake up in time to hike to the fort on the opposite side. Also, this hike is far less crowded which makes it even more appealing to take your dog.
From the main road, the trailhead is tricky to find. Go up behind the police department, you'll find a set of stairs to your right. Keep climbing the stairs between apartment buildings until you'll find a small the trailhead (this one is marked on google maps). It's just to the left of the driveway.
Still bring plenty of water and check your dog's paws during and the hike for little pokey burrs that might be stuck between the toes! Our poor guy has such hair feet, we usually need an extra 10 minutes when we get home to check his toes.

Limitless Speed Boat Kotor
@thepointsplan
Seeing Kotor Bay and Montenegro from the water is a wonderful experience. There are many options to go see "The Blue Cave" among a few other stops: the island churches, abandoned submarine bays, and forts turned into high dollar resorts (only from the water). Our guide gave us some interesting facts and local lore about each spot.
I would suggest renting a kayak or paddle board just to get the water perspective and skip the other stops all-together. You'll still get the beautiful views of the bay, but it will be a lot cheaper than paying to go on a speed boat tour.
Our experience of the blue cave was disappointing. The boats drive right thru the cave and with so many people in the water and boats maneuvering through the waves, it's a disaster waiting to happen. I will say, the water in the cave was in fact a very pretty blue.

Food!
Each section is roughly organized from most expensive to least expensive; of course this could vary based on what and how much you order.
Breakfast + Lunch
Dojmi
@thepointsplan
It looks like it should be a tourist trap, and it kind of is, but the French toast was soooo good! The place has plenty of tables and space we thought it was a few restaurants instead of the same one spread out along the front wall Kotor.

Excellent coffee, great food, and the nicest staff. Sit outside and enjoy plenty of fans with water misters. A true paradise for the super hot summer mornings in Kotor Bay

Grab and go bakery. Get here early and be prepared to order quickly! The bakery serves up delicious pastries, but the staff and everyone behind you in line is in no mood to wait for you to figure out what you want. Probably best to have your partner hold your dog outside if you can. If you're flying solo (with your dog) just make sure they are on their best behavior!

Lunch + Dinner
Stari Mlini
@thepointsplan
This is your one fancy meal. This is the most expensive meal we've encountered in Kotor Bay, but my goodness the place was stunning. Go a little before sunset and make sure to walk around the winding stone paths to take in all of the beautiful scenery and of course take pictures. The food was pretty good, but really, you're paying for the view. This was also the first time we didn't sweat through dinner and had plenty of space to bring our larger dog.

In second place for most expensive meal, but delicious nonetheless. We had a wonderful quiet dinner right on the water at sunset. The food was top notch, but pricey.

Dinner with a fantastic view, on the water, while being serenaded by a saxophone player? Done. This place had a beautiful view of the mountains at sunset, right on the water. The food and the service were fantastic and the prices were reasonable.
Dog friendly too!
Make a reservation to get your spot.

La Catedrale Pasta Bar
@thepointsplan
Oof this place was good! I tried to make a reservation, but was told to just show up and have a drink while waiting for a table, so that's what we did! The small tables along the wall represent the line for the restaurant; order a drink, it's worth the wait. The staff was very friendly and very busy. Order some of their wine (they have their own label) and don't miss the prosciutto bruschetta (you can entertain yourselves while you wait by trying to say that one 5x fast).

"Ladovina" Kitchen & Wine Bar
@thepointsplan
Good seafood and quaint restaurant. The waiter did a great job of finding a table for us (without a reservation) for a larger dog. The food and service were wonderful, but perhaps overpriced.

Pepe Nero

This place was REALLY good! Tucked away in the Old Town, the place has a decent sized outdoor patio with cherubs highlighted above on a balcony, watching in envy as you enjoy a very tasty meal. Even the salad was amazing.
We had just enough space for our larger dog, but again, the cats where everywhere and tested our dogs patience.

Pier65 Restaurant

We got lucky and sat outside and enjoyed a live concert at the end of the alley; it was like sitting back-stage. The food, service and atmosphere were all good, and the prices very reasonable, except for the casserole which was slightly overpriced.
Stop in for lunch or dinner!

MARENDA steak house
@thepointsplan
If you're craving the best steak in town, this is it. This place was amazing. The food and service were both phenomenal. We ordered a mixed plate of meat and french fries and were asked to switch to a larger table because what came out of the kitchen was a massive tray of food. To top it all off, the dessert was amazing too. All for a very reasonable price (and definitely a better deal than what you can find in old town). Dog friendly, inside and out, but I would recommend giving them a heads up so that they can find/ reserve a good table.

Just outside the city walls with a beautiful patio overlooking the water and the city lit up at night makes for a lovely atmosphere. The food was delicious and plentiful and a not so bad price too!

Konoba Roma

Tasty pasta place in old town. The atmosphere was lovely. We were seated right away and were serenaded by street performer, violinist in the square during dinner. I was served the most generous glass of wine yet.
Dog friendly, but beware of all the cats in old town!

Pizzeria Pronto
@thepointsplan
Order a slice or a whole pie at the window to go/ if you have your dog with you, or wait for a table to open up inside if you're flying furry'less. The pizza here is amazing. Don't get sucked into the other tourist traps with a larger set-up and better view.

Marshall's Gelato мороженое
@thepointsplan
We've gotten into the not so healthy habit of stopping here after dinner every night. I'm not mad about it. It's SO. GOOD. I recommend the chocolate, if you're going for two scoops, then my husband recommends the banana and chocolate.

Is it ice cream? Is it gelato? Not sure, but I do know it was delicious and we're going back! They even gave our dog a mini spoon for being such a good boy.
