A Food Guide to Downtown Lancaster PA

A Food Guide to Downtown Lancaster PA

My family moved to Lancaster when I was 19. When my mother told me Lancaster had become one of the coolest towns on the East Coast over the last ten years, I had a lot of skepticism. It turns out, she was right. Lancaster is a treasure trove of cute art galleries, small boutiques, and delicious food. I always try to sample new places whenever I go back. Here's a list of some of my favorites!

Bistro Barberet & Bakery
@markfedoronko
Part bakery and part French bistro, Barberet may be the best bakery I've been to in the US (and I do happen to like bakeries a lot). Owner Cedric Barberet would be a candidate for premier pastry chef in his home country of France; seeing a shop with such delicious breads, pastries, and desserts is unreal in Central PA. Up front, my personal favorites are the almond croissant and the Opera cake. Their madeleines and macarons are pretty good too (as is everything in the display case). In the back, the casual bistro serves delicious French food. I usually go for some moules frites when I dine, but everything is good. Make sure you save room for dessert - the Île Flottante is a must have for any first time visitors!

LUCA
@markfedoronko
A gem of a modern Italian restaurant, Luca is a real treat. With delicious antipasti, fresh homemade pastas, and wonderful cocktails, the restaurant is a top pick in Lancaster. The interior is casual but chic, and has large doors that open onto the front patio during the summer. Historically, the restaurant had delicious pizzas (including the only good gluten free pizza I've ever eaten). However, Luca is phasing out its in restaurant pizzas and opening up a standalone pizzeria outside of the downtown Lancaster. Worth the trip if you ask me!

Callaloo
@markfedoronko
A really unique restaurant, Callaloo serves Trinidadian food. With specials like curries served with "bus up shut" (the Trinidadian name for paratha), yam dumplings, and roti, Callaloo is a great place for those who like spicy food or for those who want to try something different. The space is quite casual and makes for a great laid-back experience

C'est La Vie
@markfedoronko
A fun and casual bistro with French notes, C'est la Vie serves delicious cocktails and wonderful food. During the summer, the seating spills out onto the square around Lancaster Central Market, providing a really wonderful al fresco dining experience. If an elegant supper club is what you are looking for, Josephine's is located in the basement and also serves up delicious food.

Lancaster Central Market
@markfedoronko
The centerpiece of downtown, Lancaster Central Market is a gathering spot in Lancaster. Open three days a week (Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday) the market has a bit of a hodgepodge that is quite apt of modern day Lancaster. With Mennonite farmers next to hipster coffee shops next to delicious ethnic food dealers, the Central Market should be a must stop for any foodie in town.

Himalayan Curry & Grill
@markfedoronko
Himalaya Grill is a longtime favorite in downtown Lancaster for Nepalese and Indian food. With delicious naan and curries and unique dishes like goat, this is a great place for an exotic meal. At lunch, a delicious buffet is served.

Norbu Lancaster
@markfedoronko
One of two Bhutanese restaurants in Pennsylvania (the other being owned by the same family), Norbu is owned by a Bhutanese-American couple showcasing the cuisine of the small central Asian country. At lunch they have a delicious weekday buffet. The supposed star of the show is datsi, the national dish of Bhutan, which involves a "cheese" sauce that tastes more milky. While tasty, many would argue the momos and pakoras are the best thing on the menu

Citronnelle
@markfedoronko
An eclectic restaurant showcasing food from around the world, Citronelle is a wonderful small restaurant. It's small outdoor patio is particularly pleasant. If you can, make sure to go to one of their specialty themed nights, where the menu is transformed to show off the food of a given country. Countries have ranged from South Africa to Slovenia to Afghanistan

New Holland Coffee Co.
@markfedoronko
There are a slew of great coffee houses around downtown Lancaster. New Holland is probably my favorite. This may be influenced by the fact they are across the street from Barberet which facilitates getting good baked goods with good coffee. But I digress.
