Going Camping in Virginia
1. Shenandoah State Park
Experience the beautiful 105-mine drive of Skyline Drive in Shenandoah! This is a personal favorite of mine in the autumn months as the tree foliage drops the jaws of every nature enthusiast.
Shenandoah has over 200,000 acres of protected lands along the Blue Ridge Mountains and offers several campgrounds, RV spots, and cabins. I love the spots in Big Meadows and Loft Mountain. There are numerous hikes all throughout the park that are easily accessible from along the road.
Shenandoah also provides many in-park shops for all the snacks and gear you may need!
Northern entrance is approx. 1.15 hours from NOVA
If you are making it to Shenandoah, make sure you take the detour for Luray Caverns! The caves are uniques and captivating to all visitors.
2. Grayson Highlands State Park
The highlands are especially known for its wild ponies and high mountain meadows. This park offers many beautiful camping and hiking opportunities. The Appalachian Trail passes through the park, and the views from Mt. Rogers, the highest point in VA, are spectacular!
This one is a trek from NOVA, but so worth it! The drive to Hickory Ridge Campground is approx. 6.15 hours
3. George Washington & Jefferson National Forests
This vast expanse of public lands offers numerous camping opportunities. Whether you are interested in backcountry camping, RV camping, or car camping, you'll find a variety of options (:
I have not personally visited this destination yet, but my friends love it for the backcountry hiking and camping opportunities.

4. Douthat State Park
Nestled in the Allegheny Mountains, this State Park is known for its picturesque lake and scenic beauty. The lake covers 50 acres of land and provides so much opportunity for water activities. The park offers camping facilities along with hiking, swimming, fishing, and boating opportunities.
There are no horse rentals, but you can visit the horse equestrian campground at the northern end of the park.

5. New River Gorge National Park & Preserve
A park that provides a plethora of activities! Visitors enjoy provided activities such as white water rafting, biking, climbing, hunting, fishing, backpacking, and camping. Visit the waterfalls or see their impressive New River Gorge Bridge that is the longest steel span in the western hemisphere, 876ft over the river.

I saved the best for last, because this is currently my favorite camp spot in Virginia!
