Enjoy this Guide from an Amsterdam LOCAL.
I've lived in Amsterdam since 2014 and have personally curated this list with you in mind.
Whether you're looking for luxury, traditional, or budget, I've laid out these recommendations in a way where you can start with finding where you'd like to stay and go from there.
Keep in mind that the city is very easy to get around, so you don't need to be in the center of the city for things to be easily accessible!
If it's your first time in Amsterdam, you might want to stay in the city center if your budget allows. This is where the canal ring is located and all those beautiful buildings you know and love. It's also the busiest part of the city and the oldest, so sidewalks may be small and uneven, and you might encounter large groups of visitors.Ā
That said, it is absolutely beautiful! There are also many good restaurants and bars around and you are near most of the tourist sites, so you wouldn't really have to use public transportation if you are able to walk easily.Ā
If you can, wake up here on Saturday and get their bottomless brunch (the bubbles are bottomless!). The rooms are unique and you've never been to a hotel like it.
SPLURGE ON THIS! If you can, stay here. It will be one of, if not, the most unique and romantic stays you'll experience. It's in the middle of the Amstel river and a boat captain drops you off. It's insanely amazing.
Unassuming on the outside, but quite nice and modern on the inside. It's near the Amsterdam Central Station so it's very close to trains, trams, metro and ferries, plus there's a bus stop just outside the building.
With so much personality, this is a can't-miss place to stay. It's on a canal, but not on a busy section and is close to most things you'll be looking to do.
Located in a 100-year-old monument in the Amsterdamse School style of architecture. It's close to Centraal Station and is a luxury hotel.

De Pijp
De Pijp is a vibrant neighborhood teeming with character and charm. Nestled south of the city center, De Pijp offers a diverse array of experiences, from its bustling street markets to its quaint cafes and eclectic boutiques. Known for its bohemian atmosphere and multicultural flair, this neighborhood attracts visitors seeking a taste of authentic Amsterdam life. Explore the iconic Albert Cuyp Market, indulge in delicious Dutch cuisine at local eateries, and discover hidden gems along its picturesque canals. Whether you're drawn to its artistic spirit or its lively nightlife, De Pijp promises a memorable stay for every traveler.
Service at the Okura is unparalleled, and while the rooms might be a tad outdated, you'll feel that hint of luxury everywhere. If you stay here, make time for any of the fine-dining restaurants and the top-floor bar. You won't be disappointed.
There's nothing about this hotel that will remind you of your college days, and you'll even be welcomed with a stunning garden out front. This place is nice and yet a bit understated.
Very basic for those who just want a place to stay and nothing else.

Amsterdam West
Amsterdam West is a dynamic and diverse district that encompasses the vibrant neighborhoods of both Amsterdam West and Nieuw-West.
Located just west of the city center, this area offers a rich tapestry of cultures, cuisines, and experiences. Explore the eclectic mix of historic architecture and modern developments, from charming canal-side streets to bustling market squares. Indulge in culinary delights from around the world at local eateries, or immerse yourself in the thriving arts scene at galleries and performance spaces. With green parks, lively neighborhoods, and a welcoming atmosphere, Amsterdam West invites you to discover its unique blend of tradition and innovation.
A favorite of one of my favorite travel celebrities and this is a great brand that I've stayed with twice. Very unique location compared to the rest of the city.
For business visitors or those who want to be close to the airport or the rest of the major cities in the Netherlands but stay in Amsterdam, this could be a good choice for you if you have a car.
Quirky is the name of the game here. Away from the busiest part of town, but still with easy access, this is a fun and quirky spot with delicious food and drinks.
For those on a budget or love the Hostel life, check out Stayokay near the famous Vondelpark!

And don't miss the bustling atmosphere of Javaplein, where trendy cafes, lively bars, and diverse cuisines await.
This is one of Amsterdam's most famous hotels so I had to add it to this list if it fits in your budget. Many celebs have stayed here, so maybe you'll like it, too!
Located on a canal, right next to the Overamstel train station, and right by the highway, this hotel is about convenience with its understated accommodations.
Directly off the highway and each to reach by car and still within a 10-minute walk to the Overamstel train/metro station.

Van der Valk is a brand I love, and this one is by the RAI Amsterdam Convention Center and close to the Zuidas, which would be helpful for those here on business. But it's also by the RAI and Europaplein metro stations.

Amsterdam Noord (North)
Step off the beaten path and into a world of creative energy and artistic expression. Explore the innovative architecture of the Eye Filmmuseum and the A'DAM Tower, where panoramic views of the city await from atop the observation deck and the tallest swing in Europe. Take a stroll or bike ride along the scenic waterfront, soaking in the industrial charm and breathtaking vistas. And don't miss the vibrant cultural scene at NDSM-werf, a former shipyard turned dynamic creative hub.Ā
With cool views and a style that might make you think you are in someone's bedroom, this is a cool accommodation just across the water from Centraal Station easily accessible from the free ferry.
Located in Amsterdam Noord (my neighborhood!) it offers more affordable rooms in dorms or in private rooms in a unique setting.

Hotels in Amsterdam Zuid-Oost (South-east)
Dive into the bustling shopping and entertainment hub of Amsterdamse Poort, where you'll find everything from local boutiques to global brands. Immerse yourself in the electrifying atmosphere of events at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, home to top-tier sports matches and world-class concerts. Also here are the Ziggo Dome and AFAS Live, also for concerts and shows.Ā
SPLURGE ON THIS! If you can, stay here. It will be one of, if not, the most unique and romantic stays you'll experience. It's in the middle of the Amstel river and a boat captain drops you off. It's insanely amazing.
You'll find this crane in Amsterdam Noord in the NDSM neighborhood (the one with all the street art). It's 3 suites on top of each other with a hot tub on top. Each have their own eclectic style.
This super unique apartment is on KNSM island just east of Amsterdam Central Station. It has 2 bedrooms, a full bathroom, and a kitchen. If you can climb ladder-type stairs, the second bedroom is a crazy experience! And it has a hidden toilet so you don't have to go down ladder-steps in the middle of the night...but you better be cozy with your roommate for it!
Next to Westerpark, you'll find this little apartment among regular apartments. So even though it's a unique place to stay, it's in a very local spot, which, in itself, is quite a unique experience.
