Salzburg is a beautiful city, but what makes it even more special is the surrounding nature, with its imposing mountains and Alpine lakes. This guide offers you inspiration for the best day trips in the Salzburg Region, Upper Austria and Bavaria.

Fuschlsee
@adventureinprogress
The closest lake to the city of Salzburg and the best one for swimming in summer due its clear waters. The main town is Fuschl am See with restaurants and cafes overlooking the lake.

Wolfgangsee Lake
@adventureinprogress
The best towns on this lake are St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang, where you can wonder through the picturesque streets and stop in one of the many cosy traditional cafes. If you don't have time for both, I suggest visiting St. Wolfgang which is slightly bigger and offers amazing views of the lake from the imposing church. During the Christmas season, traditional Christmas market can be found in both locations. My favourite cafés for a sweet treat are Kaffeewerkstatt in St. Wolfgang and Liva in St. Gilgen.

Hallstatt
@adventureinprogress
This fairytale town is a very touristy place overlooking the Hallstätter See and can be overcrowded during the high season. I recommend visiting it in any case because it is one of the prettiest places I have ever seen in every season of the year.

Königssee
@adventureinprogress
This lake in Bavaria, Germany, can be reached with a 30-minute drive from Salzburg. You can decide to make a quick stop in the town or, if you have more time, you can explore the whole lake (which is otherwise not visible) with a boat tour.

Hintersee
@adventureinprogress
Another, more hidden and unknown lake in Bavaria, where the walk around the entire lake takes only 45 minutes. I recommend stopping for coffee and cake at Cafe Gelfart, a very simple and rustic family coffee shop.

Berchtesgaden
@adventureinprogress
A small town in Bavaria, half an hour from Salzburg, with traditional houses, cosy cafés and mountains in the background. My advice is to go up to Kirchleitn Kapelle at sunset to enjoy an extraordinary view of the town and mountains.

Mondsee
@adventureinprogress
This town, namesake of the lake on which it is located, is in Upper Austria. It is a popular destination during the summer months for those who want to practice water sports like sailing, wind surfing water skiiing or simply swimming... In the town there are some pastry shops for the sweet tooth as well as restaurants for every taste.

In all the above-mentioned destinations, there are many trails for hikers of all levels to explore the surrounding nature and reach vantage points above the lakes.
