Budapest is a super affordable, yet rich in Hungarian history, architecture & culture. Many people visit for a long weekend. However Hungary is way more than just goulash & Budapest. 1 hour away from the city and you're in another world. In an ASIAN world. 🎎
We spent one of our favorite autumn weekends in Cserhát-mountain, when our little girl was 1 year old. The best part of this weekend was that we visited these locations following a special Asian theme. The itinerary is totally toddler-approved!
My husband and I have loved Asia for a decade now. He lived in Japan, and I have a deep connection with South-Korea. Needless to say, with such a background, everything Asian related is a little closer to our hearts.
The most convenient place to stay at is Grabensia. The apartments are nice, the food in the inn is delicious (big Hungarian portions) & you have free access to the garden, the spa and one tour walk at Samsara (not a sound bath, it has to be booked separately).

Peace Gong - INDONESIA
🏛 What it is: statue
📍 Where: Gödöllő (50 min car drive from Budapest center)
⌚️ Opening hours: none
🎟 Admission: free
⏳ When: anytime during the day
We started our weekend in Gödöllő. It was close and I was completely surprised that this gong was here - because I confess I had never heard of it before.
The installation is a gift from Indonesia to the city of Gödöllő. It is the 5th in the world and the one and only monument in Europe, which can be rung by anyone, expressing their desire for peace. In the center there is the blue globe, surrounded by the symbols of the main world religions followed by the flags of the countries of the Earth.
In memory of the victims of the bombing on the island of Bali in 2002, the Indonesian World Peace Committee created this work (with several copies), which have since been erected in different parts of the world. The gong is 2 meters in diameter, weighs 150 kilograms, and is the work of an Indonesian sculptor (Djuyoto Suntani). Our country received this offer in recognition of its civilizational and economic-technological progress, as well as the successful implementation of peaceful social relations.

Park: 08-20:00 every day - The opening hours of the church may change, you can find information on their website
Tea room and gift shop: from Tuesday to Sunday from 13:00 to 17:00.
The park is big, with a lot of green space, ideal for a 1-2 hours activity.
There are a total of 7 stupas in Hungary. The stupa in the Kőrösi Csoma Sándor Memorial Park (Buddha Park) was consecrated by the Dalai Lama and was also blessed by representatives of world religions.
Although it is not typical, you can also enter this stupa. Inside the building we find valuable relics, a small exhibition about Buddhism, and the prayer mill. In the stupa, the "mani-korló" (prayer mill) rotates non-stop day and night. Inside there is a ton of paper scrolls containing a sacred scripture containing the essence of the Buddha's teachings, containing four hundred million mantras.

I would like to give you a little help on how to respectfully visit (& try) the prayer mills, even if you do not practice Buddhism:
☸️ It must be rolled clockwise
☸️ Helps accumulating wisdom and merit
☸️ Helps to get rid of negative energies
☸️ It is traditionally inscribed with a Tibetan mantra
In addition to the stupa, the park also has a memorial pavilion, a museum, a teahouse, a gift shop and the Temple of the Redeemer Buddha Mother. The building follows the architectural style of the ancient Hun temples, which are preserved in Tibet and Mongolia to this day.
Grabensia - TIBET, CHINA, JAPAN, INDIA
🏛 What it is: hotel, garden, sound therapy, spa
📍 Where: Garáb (Grabensia hostel)
⌚️ Opening hours: sound therapy and guided tours on Facebook, after registration
🎟 Admission: The garden & the Japanese-style bath are free for Grabensia hostel guests, but reservation for Samsara sound bowl therapy is required. (Sound therapy can also be used by external people.)
In the area of Grabensia, it is possible to stay in several buildings, and they also include one (the only) inn, where you can eat very delicious and plentiful Hungarian food.
On their website, you can read: SAMSARA is currently the world's largest sound bowl, which is also recorded in the Guinness Book of Records. It was cast in 2018 in a bell casting workshop with centuries of tradition. It weighs more than 2.5 tons & has a diameter of 233 cm. Due to its size & power, the SAMSARA is a huge opportunity for its listeners to enjoy the healing, relaxing. In addition to the fact that it was made based on an original Nepali sound bowl recipe, a small sound bowl was also poured into it. Thus ensuring the continuity of the sound bowl line.

Becskei Megvilágosodás Sztúpa (Stupa of enlightment)
Hungary's third publicly accessible Buddhist stupa stands on a hill above Becske near the Cserhát mountain. The white-painted Stupa of Enlightenment, built in 2008, is an excellent place for quiet contemplation and reflection, but it can also be a destination for a family outing. The stupa on Csiga Hill can be approached from the parking lot at the end of Petőfi Sándor Street on a narrow, paved serpentine road. The nine-meter-high, white-painted square-based building symbolizes Buddha's enlightenment at the age of 35. There is a relatively large concrete space around the stupa, where even children can run around (paying attention to the religious people staying here).

This thematic Asian weekend in Cserhát Mountain is really easy to pull it off with small child(ren). Of course, this route can be completed with many other local villages and hiking trails. We also visited Hollókő this weekend, as it is in the neighborhood of Garáb, but in this article I focused only on the Asian line.
