Drive through the lavender fields of Valensole Plateau, Provence

The Valensole Plateau, with its vast expanse of purple fields, is one of the most iconic and photographed landscape in the world. The endless rows of lavender and fields of bright yellow sunflowers make it an area of incredible beauty and intoxicating fragrance in the summer. There are many lavender farms, open fields and distilleries along the way, so there are a number of options for exploring. This guide has my recommendations on scenic views, photo worthy fields and pretty villages.

Avignon is an excellent base if you want to drive around Provence, as most of the lavender farms are about 2 hours drive. Here is my guide to find out more about this historic city:

Lavender flowers in Valensole bloom from late June to mid July, transforming the plateau into a vibrant pallet of purple. It gets very busy during the day, so factor in extra time to navigate through the crowds. You might find early mornings or evenings to be a little quieter, and can sometimes be the best times to wander around and capture memories of the lavender fields.

I have included a number of sites below, but it will not be possible to visit them all and enjoy each experience in just one day. For a day visit I would recommend planning a route with one or two villages for pit stops. If you would like an informative tour or want to buy lavender products, include a distillery tour in your itinerary. If you are visiting for the pics then pick a route and keep an eye out for the fields and farms on either side of the roads.
