Avignon is in the heart of Provence - an amazing city brimming with history and charm. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site, surrounded by stone ramparts with many streets and tiny alleys to explore.
Here are my recommendations on sights to see, where to stay and places to eat.

Palais des Papes
@anniekatt
This colossal 14th century palace was once the seat of the papacy when Pope Clement V fled Rome. Covering a massive 15, 000 square meters, this palace is the union of Old Palace and New Palace, which was built by two different popes.
Explore the vast chambers and grand halls, and pop over to the rooftop terrace and cafe for spectacular views over the city.
It is recommended that tickets are booked in advance, as lines can be long especially in the summer months.

Vergers Urbain V

A wonderful playground on the other side of the Palais des Papes. Kids can enjoy the climbing structures, wooden bears, a slide and water features during the warmer months. Dogs are allowed on leash, but must be away from the play area.

Jardin des Doms
@anniekatt
This beautiful hilltop garden is a relaxing landscape to enjoy the sights of Avignon. There is a small playground for kids to let loose, then head over to the park to wander through the paths, feed ducks and swans, and enjoy ice cream or hot chocolate at the cafe.
Take in views of the River Rhône, the Pont d'Avignon bridge and the rest of Avignon from the top.
Dogs are allowed on leash.

Pont Saint-Benezet
@anniekatt
Also known as the Pont d'Avignon, this half bridge is a famous landmark in Avignon as it sits across the River Rhône. The original wooden bridge was built in the 11th century, and was later replaced by a stone bridge. The river was too powerful and washed away most of the bridge, with only four arches remaining. Thanks to a catchy French children's song 'Sur le Pont d’Avignon', the bridge, the bridge is now a reminder of the city's rich history.
There is a fee to enter the bridge, or you can see it from afar from the river path or from the top of Jardin du Rocher des Doms.

Rue des Teinturiers
@anniekatt
The street of the waterwheels. This pretty cobbled street from the 14th century was once the heart of Avignon's silk industry. There are 4 waterwheels still in action along the canals, along with cafes, restaurants and shops in the old stone buildings. The street runs from Rue des Lices to Rue Guillaume-Puy.
