Gdansk City Break
Poland has been one of the most underrated countries we've been to. And we will die on the hill that everyone should visit at least once! That being said, Gdansk was such a charming and unassuming city and we are truly so glad we took a chance on it!
Where to Stay
You'll want to stay in the Main/Old Town, it is the most convenient as mostly everything you'll want to see is in walking distance. There is also a good public transit system and uber as well. We found the city to be very walkable and didn't need any transportation outside of the ride from the airport and exloring the Tri-City.
What to Do & See
We absolutely LOVED the WWII Museum, it was one of the most comprehensive and well thought out that we've been to! We highly suggest going early in the day as we noticed it started to get a bit crowded as it got later.
Head to Royal Way, a long pedestrian street running from the Old City Gates to the river. Here you'll find the beautiful colored buildings, shops and restaurants. You'll also find a few of the must see sights here!
While taking a walk down Royal Way you will see the ornate Neptune's Fountain. Right next to the fountain you can admire the Golden House, a beautifully ornate building dating back to the 1600's.
Not far from the fountain you will find the Main Town Hall. If you're up for climbing some stairs, head up to the observation deck, the view is well worth it!
Walk along the Motlawa River. We're always taking sunset strolls whenever there's a riverfront involved! While you're here you can check out the Old Port Crane, dating back to the 15th century. You can head into the Maritime Museum while you're over there is that's something of interest.
If you weren't able to head up to the observation deck at the town hall but are still looking for a view, take a ride on the AmberSky ferris wheel. It is fully enclosed and gives you a good amount of viewing time up at the top! While you're in the area make sure to snap a few pictures at the 3D Gdansk sign! We also saw an adorable carousel across the river!
Take a stroll down Mariaka Street and take in all of the beautiful homes and shops!
Take a Day Trip
We took a ride to Sopot, a cute little beach town, just outside of Gdansk. During the summer months this is a VERY popular tourist area. We walked down the longest wooden pier in Europe, even in the winter this was fairly crowded, I can't imagine in the summer months! Don't forget to take a peek at the crooked house while you take a walk around the city! You can also find plenty of shopping and restaurants as well.
Street Art
A little off the beaten path, we found the Zaspa Neighborhood . We stopped over on our way back from Sopot. Full of soviet style apartment buildings, these have become canvases for local artists with amazing murals displayed along all of the sides. If you enjoy street art it's worth making a quick stop over here to check it out.
Where to Eat & Drink
We had an absolutely delicious breakfast at Ducha66, which was recommended by our airbnb host... Tip: always ask around to locals what they recommend, sometimes you'll end up at places you may not have found otherwise!
You absolutely cannot take a trip to Poland and skip out on pierogi & other traditional meals... the food in Poland is also VERY underrated. We had a delicious, traditional meal at Pierogarnia U Dzika.
We didn't spend a lot of time discovering the nightlife on this trip BUT we did find a really cool spot for drinks. We stopped by Pixel, a craft cocktail bar which offered a selection of board games and video games. It was a really fun vibe and the staff were all very friendly! We would absolutely stop by anytime we're in the area.
