Fuerteventura: a list of my must-sees
F u e r t e v e n t u r a
Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa. It is known for its unique geological features, rugged volcanic landscapes and sandy beaches. It was the first one I visited. I booked a flight to this lovely island in February 2023. I went there solo, which I can really recommend. The island is really laid back, with a lot of people travelling in their van. I never felt uncomfortable exploring solo.
The island is a paradise for beach lovers, water sports enthusiasts, and nature admirers. It offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure (also very known for surfing, so go for it!) There are a lot of surfing schools who offer guided lessons. I have good memories because I had my first surfing lesson over there. I booked my session with the BeDreamer Surf School. I also stayed a couple of nights in their hostel, where there was a really chilled atmosphere :)
Here are some other surf schools on the island:
But first things first, the flight to Fuerteventura. You can find relatively cheap flights on Skyscanner. I paid around 50 euros to fly there and return. The airport is located in El Matorral.
In my opinion, the easiest way to get around the island is by renting a car. You can explore the island the way you want and you don't need to look up any time tables of public transport. There are a lot of rental car companies who can help you further. Be aware that the time zone is one hour earlier than in Belgium (GMT+1).

The charming village

Oh how I loved this little place! It is a very small but charming village with a couple of houses, fishermen boats at the beach and some restaurants. I can really recommend hiking in the volcanic area and watch the beautiful ocean.

When to visit?
Fuerteventura enjoys a mild and pleasant climate throughout the year, making it an ideal destination for sun-seekers at any time. However, the best time to visit is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is warm but not too hot, and the island is less crowded.
What to do?
1) Beach hopping
Fuerteventura has over 150 beaches with golden sands and crystal-clear waters. Some of the must-visit beaches include Corralejo, Sotavento, Cofete, and El Cotillo. Whether you are looking for water sports, sunbathing, or simply relaxing by the sea, Fuerteventura has a beach for every preference.
2) Surfingggggggg! Or other watersports
The island's windy climate makes it a heaven for water sports enthusiasts. Windsurfing and kiteboarding are particularly popular, with spots like Sotavento Beach hosting international competitions. Lessons and equipment rentals are available for beginners, ensuring everyone can enjoy the thrill of gliding over the waves.
3) Try out the local cuisine
Indulge in the flavors of Canarian cuisine at the island's restaurants. Don't miss the opportunity to try traditional dishes like papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes), mojo sauces, fresh seafood, and goat cheese, accompanied by locally produced wines and spirits.
4) Well-being activities
Ofcourse it is also important to take some time for yourself and have some deep inner rest. Fuerteventura offers a range of holistic activities to promote well-being and harmony of the mind, body, and spirit.
Here are some holistic activities you can experience on the island: yoga and meditation retreats, sound healing workshops, reiki and energy healing, ayurveda, ecstatic dance events and the list goes oooooon! :)
