Guatemala, a gem in Central America, invites travelers with its stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and warm hospitality. From the breathtaking ruins of ancient Mayan cities like Tikal to the vibrant markets of Chichicastenango, each corner of Guatemala tells a story steeped in history and tradition. The country is home to beautiful lakes, such as Lake Atitlán, and majestic volcanoes that offer both adventure and tranquility. Whether you're drawn by the allure of its stunning natural beauty, the vibrant colors of its textiles, or the delicious flavors of its cuisine, Guatemala promises an unforgettable journey that immerses you in the heart of its diverse and captivating culture.
The best time to travel to Guatemala is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During these months, the weather is typically pleasant, with warm temperatures and minimal rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploration. Average daytime temperatures range from 24-30°C, especially in the highland regions.
For a well-rounded experience, a trip of at least 10 to 15 days is recommended. This allows ample time to explore the highlights, including the vibrant city of Antigua, the majestic ruins of Tikal, the breathtaking beauty of Lake Atitlán, and the cultural richness found in local markets. With a week or more, you can enjoy not just the sights but also the delightful culinary offerings and warm interactions with the friendly Guatemalan people.
Antigua
It’s a beautiful city with lots of good food places!
Activities
The most famous activie is the Volcano Acatenango hike which you probably already know.
Must do if your in Guatemala, but be prepared it’s a hard hike and there are lots of people. But the stunning view when the volcano erupted was worth it all! 🔥
I recommend going with Soy tours! Sadly when I was there it was all booked out for 2 weeks. But i heard this is the best company that’s why I wanted to go with them.
I went with Ca Traveler, we had lots of good food, great guides and an amazing time. It was a very hard hike but so worth it. The base came has a good view, the tents are nice. Couples had a tent for them self, singles have a bunk bed, it was very cold and not the most comfortable but it was a bed.😁

Next to the big hike you can walk to this viewpoint or do some other activities.
The owner is swiss and serves 3 typical swiss dishes in a very authentic way. After 5 months I really missed the food from home (Switzerland), I tried all 3 dishes, raclette, cheese fondue and "züri gschnätzlets". They have other very delicfood too. I love it all. Ask the chef for bread which is only eaten on sunday! 10/10!
Real mexican tacos, absolutely delicious! I think I went there like 5 times.😅 Also the little garden with the old airplan is very pretty. I will definitely go again.
I was recommended this beautiful place. I really liked this small farm with a restaurant and organic store. It is one of the most beautiful places to eat and linger. They also have a butterfly farm and beehives.
Street food infront of the church. Be careful it is very cheap but a lot of people got food poisoning. I was fine but lots of my friends weren’t. Don’t try befroe the Volcano hike.😉You will thank me later!
I went here for some drinks but you can also eat here. The view from the rooftop is amazing and the drinks very delicious. Everyone was very friendly, good service.
I stayed 2 times in the Hostel, I love this places! Breakfast included and everybody is very nice. The Staff is very helpful and book you all the shuttles. The beds are soo comfy, and I absolutely love the shower/ bathroom!😍$
Sister hostel from Maya Papaya, with a pool, sauna and rooftop! This place is a bit out of the city centre but totally fine to walk. The breakfast is included aswell as coffee. I did yoga in the morning at the rooftop they have yoga mats, love it! $$
It’s not only a Hostel, also a nice rooftop bar. Very nice view to relax. My friend stayed here and loved it, big rooms, beds with curtains and nice bathrooms. I only went for drinks there. $
Very good location right in the centre. Pretty garden with pool, delicious restaurant, lots of places to chill and very friendly staff. $$

Next you could go to El Paredón if you need some days on the beach or you go to Lake Atitlan.
El Paredón
It’s a beach town with a black sand beach and lots of party.
Basically during the day you chill at the hostel, since it’s just too hot on the beach. For sunset you to the beach to watch the sunset and then party in the evening. But also you can go surfing or play volleyball on the beach, just make sure you use enough sun protection. There is a Turtle release, where the staff explains you all about the cute little animals.
Almost everyone goes to Lake Atitlan to San Pedro for a spanish school. If you just want to relax on the lake I would go to Santa Cruz la Laguna or the hippie town San Marcos la Laguna.
Transport
I came with a shuttle organised by my hostel in Antigua. There is also a local bus that you can take. But the locals told me it’s not too safe to take it. I know some people look it and didn’t had any problems. You need to go to Panajachel and then take a boat to the place where you want to stay. The boats run very often and it’s very easy to get one also cheap. Be careful the bags can get wet on the pot of the boat.
I stayed at a homestay organised by the spanish school.
Sunrise hike up to this viewpoint is a must. It’s a easy hike with a nice view! You can even see Vulcano Acatenango and Fuego. We could see the eruption of Fuego!
Every sunday they have the biggest market if you have time you should visit. I had to skip it because I didn’t had the time. But must be a very nice activity/ experience.

Huehuetenango
A local told me about this place, there are not many tourists. It's around 4 hours from Panajachel, but probably it will take you around 5 hours to get there.
You walk inside the cave just with candles, it’s a very nice and fun thing to do. Also there are waterfalls to see and jump next to and you do river tubing.
I stayed for 3 nights. It’s amazing the vibe the atmosphere, in the middle of the jungle. So they have loud music starting very early until 11 pm. Do not book the noisy dorm, it’s the biggest cheapest dorm. You can bring food/ Snacks with you, but you have to put it in a locker because of the animals/ insects. Basically you get all your meals at the Hostel, i really liked the food. The best part is you can walk to semuc champey in 7 minutes!
If Greengo’s Hotel is already full I would stay here. It has a great vibe and a nice view. But you need a shuttle to get to Semuc Champey.

Flores / Tikal
Tikal is an ancient Mayan city located in northern Guatemala, within the Petén rainforest. It was one of the most powerful cities during the Mayan civilization, flourishing between 200 and 900 AD. The site is famous for its impressive pyramids, temples, and palaces, including Temple I (Temple of the Great Jaguar) and Temple IV, which rise above the jungle canopy. Tikal was a major political, economic, and cultural center, with a population that may have reached 90,000 at its peak. Today, Tikal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular archaeological and tourist destination.
There is also an airport in Flores so for a faster and easier way back you can get the plane back toGuatemala City. Otherwise you take a Shuttle back, which takes around 9-10 hours.
The Mayan Ruins, it`s one of the biggest Ruins still standing. It's worth it to get a Guide. You can not only see the ruins also a few animals are around, like monkey, coatis, tarantulas, toucans or iguanas.
It`s just an activity you can do but of course not for free. You go there by boat around 50 Q (includes return) then you pay 25 Q per P. for the entry.
This Hostel got recommended to me. The location is very nice, it`s quiet, there are lots of good restaurants and bars close by and it`s directly by the water.
