V15E12: Extremities of the Out and Back

Christopher Shontz
In this episode of venture4wd, we are based outside of Sedona, Arizona. I take the Land Rover deep into the backcountry to do some exploring away from the popular tourist areas. There, I experience spectacular landscapes among red rocks and ponderosa pines. This board contains points-of-interest and mixed media from our travels relating to V15E12.

Great Campsites…

In the field…

Bell Rock Trailhead
@venture4wd
Shannon and I enjoyed this hike around Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte in Sedona. It was four miles long, and very, very crowded at first, but once we got further in, the crowds dissipated greatly. Well-marked, well-traveled, not too much change in elevation, and very scenic and colorful!

Sycamore Falls Trailhead
@venture4wd
Lovely falls located in a deep canyon in Kaibab National Forest, southwest of Flagstaff. This is a very accessible and popular forest service destination, only a short hike of of a maintained forest road, suitable for any vehicle. There is a parking area and a vault toilet if you have to go. Reminiscent of waterfalls one might see in the Pacific Northwest.

Out on the town…

Firecreek Coffee - Cottonwood
@venture4wd
In Cottonwood, Arizona, Firecreek Coffee has this great location featuring a great space for socializing, or doing computer work, with ample parking in a town that isn’t congested with tourist activity. The coffee is decent, the pastries are standard coffee shop fare, and the vibe is great! I sat down here on my computer on Monday morning to tend to some business.

Haunted Hamburger
@venture4wd
Shannon and I went to Haunted Hamburger, in historic mining town, Jerome, Arizona, on Wednesday night. I have to be honest, the food was only fair at best. This is a tourist destination, with a great vibe, in an interesting town. So the food doesn’t have to be great. Still a great place to hang out and enjoy some comfort food and drinks with friends. Especially if you’re hanging out in Jerome for the day, which is a really cool town!

Indian Gardens Cafe & Market
@venture4wd
Wow! This place is a gem. It’s a cafe along 89A just north of Sedona, and it’s hiding in plain sight. It looks like a tourist stop at face value, but it’s truly a hip, artisan cafe. Shannon had a breakfast sandwich, and I had a croissant and a mocha. In fact, we’re there right now. Great drinks and food in a rustic setting with a lovely patio. Strongly recommended!
