V15E6: The Far Reaches of Coronado

V15E6: The Far Reaches of Coronado

Christopher Shontz
This week kicks off in Bisbee, Arizona - one of our favorite places to visit. After a quick stop in Lowell, I take the Land Rover Defender 110 Hi-Cap into Coronado National Forest to do some exploring and discover some hidden gems along the way. Swimming holes, ruins, historical landmarks, and some gorgeous campsites. Following a visit to Patagonia, Arizona, for some coffee and breakfast, I talk a little more about the aluminum Zarges K470 boxes.

Tucked Away by the Power Lines
@venture4wd
In the mountains, just a short drive from Bisbee, Arizona. This primitive dispersed site is located on BLM land, along a dusty dirt road, tucked in among the junipers. It’s accessible by any vehicle, and at a high elevation with excellent cell service. This area is popular for boondocking, so there will likely be other campers, and there are definitely more desirable neighboring sites. Enough room for one or two vehicles at this particular site. Sweeping views to the east, lovely high-desert landscape. We love staying here when visiting Bisbee!

Deep in the Wooded Canyon
@venture4wd
Wow! This is a superb backcountry site in Coronado National Forest, west of Sierra Vista, Arizona. A four-wheel drive vehicle is required to get here. It is located miles down a primitive track, deep within a wooded canyon. The canyon offers excellent shelter from the elements and wind protect. The site features a stone fire ring, a small stream, and towering conifers on a bed of pine needles. Very peaceful, with poor cell service, and enough room for one or two vehicles. Great place to settle in for a few nights and relax.

Rock Shelter of San Rafael
@venture4wd
A discreet campsite in Coronado National Forest, a short distance from Patagonia, Arizona. It’s located a quarter mile down a gentle primitive track that requires a four-wheel drive vehicle. There is an interesting rock shelter just down the hill, and this inviting grassy spot is located at the edge of the tree line at the end of a loop. There is room for a few vehicles, but the terrain is not very level. Lovely pasture and rolling mountains to the west, otherwise nicely sheltered from the elements. Some briars and cow patties. Neglected stone fire ring. Good cell service, and fairly convenient to town.

Great places to eat…

Gathering Grounds
@venture4wd
I had a 20oz mocha and a breakfast burrito. Pretty good, small town cafe. Lovely atmosphere. A must-stop if you find yourself in town and looking for a bite.

High Desert Market
@venture4wd
We had pepperoni pizzas. Natural and local ingredients. Well-crafted, and better than the pizza restaurant across the street. Very good, and looking forward to trying other things on the menu.
