V15E11: Sedona on the Red Rock Fringe

V15E11: Sedona on the Red Rock Fringe

Christopher Shontz
Adventure is afoot! This week, we venture into Coconino National Forest to explore the backcountry around Sedona, where the Arizona landscape shows off its most vibrant colors. Mother nature tests my resolve as I endure a windy evening in the ground tent. The Land Rover Defender 110 traverses Schnebly Hill Road with grace and aplomb as inconsequential bits fall off. The episode concludes with a picturesque hike along the Hangover Trail.

Secret Campsite on Canyon Rim
@venture4wd
I didn’t spend the night here, although it’s a wonderful, secluded spot at the end of a rugged four-wheel drive track that demands high-clearance. It’s a lightly-traveled forest road in Coconino National Forest. There is a stone directing here, some vegetation for shade, and enough room for two or three vehicles which might require some leveling. No cell service, and phenomenal views overlooking canyon with steep drops! If you’re looking for a place to hide - a place with a view - this is a good one!

Edge of Colorful Canyon
@venture4wd
Just on the outskirts of a popular boondocking area in Coconino National Forest, along I-17, there is this lovely, dispersed campsite flanked by junipers. Suitable for a ground tent, and enough room for two or three vehicles, with a stone fire ring and poor cell service. Accessible by any vehicle with a little ground clearance. This site is notable because there is a footpath down into a colorful canyon, with a river, a small pool, and amazing petroglyphs. Recommended place to stay, but it is dusty in the wind, and muddy in the rain, so keep an eye on the weather!

Boondocking by Oak Creek
@venture4wd
A very spacious clearing in a popular, but not-too-crowded boondocking area in Coconino National Forest, only a ten minute drive into the village of Oak Creek, Arizona. Accessible by any vehicle with great views of the valley to the south and great T-Mobile cell service. A great place to set up basecamp in a van for a week if you’re a digital nomad, and only a short distance into Oak Creek or Sedona for dining or adventure. This spot is fairly exposed. There is a stone fire ring here, and you’ll likely have neighbors at other nearby sites, but they aren’t uncomfortably close.
