Eating and Drinking in Strasbourg, France

Eating and Drinking in Strasbourg, France

Kelli Hansen
I studied abroad in Strasbourg and absolutely fell in love with this beautiful Alsatian city. It's situated just across the river from Germany which makes for a unique blend of French and German culture here in this quaint town. With canals winding through streets of half timbered houses, a gorgeous cathedral in the center of the city, and beautiful parks, it's like a city straight out of a fairytale. Here's some of my favorite places, restaurants and experiences to enjoy in Strasbourg!

Coffee & Pastry

The coffee, pastries and cafe culture are some of the best parts about Europe. Delicious espresso paired with a fresh pain au chocolat? Yes please! One of these cafés will be the perfect start to your day in Strasbourg!

Café Bretelles - Petite France
@kellihansen
This is my favorite coffee shop in Strasbourg! It's located in the picturesque neighborhood of Petite France. My friends and I would often go here to study or just enjoy a good cappuccino in an adorable place. The shop is small but there's seating upstairs or a few tables outside where you can enjoy your espresso!

Café Brant
@kellihansen
I walked past this café everyday on my way home from school. It's a quintessential French cafe where you'll find locals conversing, reading, and simply enjoying the atmosphere. It's a beautiful location to sit outside on a nice day and enjoy some coffee and one of their tarte du jours or if you're feeling hungry, try one of their main dishes!

Poulaillon Vieux-Marché-aux-Poissons
@kellihansen
While Poulaillon bakeries can be found at multiple locations in Strasbourg, this one is my favorite. Situated right across the canal in Centre-Ville, it's the perfect place to stop for a snack before climbing up the cathedral tower. I always got the praline brioche (pictured above & absolutely delicious) but there's plenty of treats to choose from including savory pretzels, macarons, and pastry cakes.

Le Quai 67
@kellihansen
This last coffee shop is just a short walk from the covered bridge where you'll find lovely views of the canals and Petite France. It's a bit more American feeling as it was started and run by American missionaries who are serving Strasbourg's refugee and immigrant communities by offering English classes and opportunities for social connections! If you're feeling social, ask about Café International, a chance to meet and chat with people from all over the world over a cup of coffee and their DELICIOUS chocolate chip cookies.

Restaurants

I lived with an amazing host family as a student in Strasbourg so I didn't need eat out very often, however these are a few of the restaurants I got to enjoy or are still on my list to try!

La Corde à Linge
@kellihansen
If you're looking for a more modern take on traditional Alsatian food, this is the place! It's located on the canal and has lovely outdoor seating, perfect for enjoying the sun and French atmosphere at lunchtime. Try their spaetzle or choucroute (sauerkraut!) and make sure to pair your meal with some of their regional wine!

Café Atlantico
@kellihansen
I walked by this restaurant everyday, it's beautiful and I always wanted to try it. It's on a boat in the canal, decorated with string lights and is the perfect place for drinks and appetizers while you enjoy being on the canal as the sun sets.

Au Pont Saint-Martin
@kellihansen
This place just has the traditional Alsatian feel to it. With a beautiful deck overlooking the canal into Petite France, it's a great place for a traditional meal where you can find menu items like tarte flambée (the Alsatian version of pizza), choucroute Royale, cordon bleu, escargot, and crème brulée.

Maison Kammerzell
@kellihansen
This restaurant was recommended to me by my host family. It's on the cathedral square, so you can enjoy your meal outside with views of the cathedral and listen to the street musicians or inside the restaurant which is decorated with beautiful stained windows and articulate paintings on the ceilings. You'll find delicious traditional food here!

Houmous & Co (Lebanon Resturant)
@kellihansen
If you get tired of Alsatian food, check out this Lebanese restaurant just a short walk from the cathedral. This was my friends favorite spot! It's nothing fancy but their chicken shawarma platter and hummus are delicious!

crepmili
@kellihansen
You can find crèpes anywhere in France and some of the best are from the little stands you'll see in plazas or squares. However, if you're looking for a fun and authentic crêpe restaurant, try creamili! I grew up with my mom making delicious crêpes at home, and these were the only ones I found in France that came close to rivaling hers.

@kellihansen
This bar has a fun and lively atmosphere! It's a great place for drinks and a snack plus, it's just a short walk from the cathedral!

Aedaen Speakeasy
@kellihansen
This speakeasy is located in the back of Aedaen Place. You'll find the entrance to this classy speakeasy by pulling open the mirror on the back wall. Enjoy some delicious pizza at Aedaen Place and then sneak back to the bar for some fancy drinks!
