Become an Artist in Southern Appalachia

Become an Artist in Southern Appalachia

NOTE: This is typically a paid guide ($25.95). I'm currently offering it for free as a way to assist our neighbors affected by Hurricane Helene, which caused severe devastation to the Southern Appalachian region on September 27, 2024. Please support the local businesses and artists listed in this guide by visiting, booking a class, buying their products, or purchasing gift cards. Consider gifting a class to people on your holiday shopping list - it will be a gift they'll never forget! Lastly, if you want to compensate me for creating this guide, you may do so by leaving a tip (button at the bottom of the page). Help more people discover this guide by saving it and sharing it. Thank you for helping Southern Appalachia recover and rebuild. We appreciate you! * * * It's time to indulge your creative side! Learn from master potters, chefs, painters, and folk artisans in the beautiful Appalachian Highlands of East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. Note: Many of these experiences require early registration, as classes fill up quickly. I encourage you to plan well in advance. If you enjoy this guide, please save it, share it, leave a tip, or write a review! Follow me and be the first to know when I create new guides. Thanks!

In the interest of making this guide as functional as possible, here's how it's organized.

I've grouped experiences first by CITY. Next you'll see the TYPE OF ART experience available in the area, followed by PLACES TO EAT: a coffee/breakfast, lunch, and dinner recommendation for each city. Then, I've suggested my top picks for LODGING in the area while you're enjoying your art experiences. Lastly, for each city you'll see the current WEATHER for the area.

Let's get started!

Jonesborough

Oil Painting

Bob Ross had it right with his "anyone can paint" philosophy. We're leveling up the instruction level here with Root Studio, the school of professional painters Tom and Peggy Root. As exceptional artists themselves, they'll guide you in creating a masterpiece of your own.

Root Studio School

Tom and Peggy Root have been professional painters for decades. They now share their expertise through classes and workshops. The best way to find out about upcoming classes is by phone (see below) or email (rootstudioschool@gmail.com). Also check their Facebook page for recent updates!

Olde Towne Pancake House and Catering
@amyisgoingplaces
Pancakes, omelets, hashed browns, biscuits and gravy... Am I making you hungry yet? Get your day started with a hearty breakfast at Olde Town Pancake House. The portions are generous, and the diner-style coffee is always available for refills. Sit on the patio on a nice day, or cozy up to the fireplace when weather turns cool. My top pick: blueberry pancakes and a cup of black coffee.

*Sad news. The inn I wanted to recommend to you in Jonesborough recently closed permanently. The General Morgan has all the historical vibes I had in mind. However, it isn't in the heart of Jonesborough like the place I'd originally planned to share with you. It's about a 30 minute drive to Root Studio or Serenity Knoll. If you're looking for somewhere to stay that's more central, scroll down to the hotel recommendation in Johnson City.

Dos Gatos Coffee Bar
@amyisgoingplaces
What do you get when an art gallery owner opens a coffee shop? Dos Gatos! Named after the two cats (Georgia and O'Keeffe) that inhabited the previous gallery/café space, Dos Gatos serves up some of the finest coffees in the area. On the walls, you'll find a selection of original art, often for sale, by an Artist of the Month. (What a great souvenir!) Artist receptions are typically on the first Friday of a month at 6pm. Check their website or give them a call for specific schedules. My top recommendation: the nitro cold brew. If you've never had nitro coffee, Dos Gatos is the place to try it for the first time. Ask your barista for the details on why it's so special. Be sure to check out the seasonal drinks selection as well. You never know what you'll find there! *offers gluten free, dairy free, and vegan options

Holy Taco Cantina Downtown
@amyisgoingplaces
Life is better with queso, especially when it's topped with mezclar de carne. Holy Taco is my spot when I'm in need of comfort food in the form of nachos. Walk through the cantina, grab a spot on the patio, and enjoy! The menu has gluten free, vegetarian, and kid-friendly options. While I recommend it as your lunch or dinner stop, they also offer breakfast burritos. Can't pass that up! My top pick: The Nasty Nachos - I amp mine up by going double protein with both carne asada (steak) and el camaron (shrimp). Add the black bean salad to the toppings.

Quirky with a touch of Louisiana zydeco is the vibe at Cootie Brown's. You can't go wrong with the thick hoagie sandwiches, made from scratch pizzas, or big enough to share nachos. What really keeps people coming back though is their famous Key Lime Pie. I'm hungry now just thinking about it all.

Take a class from a master potter! You will be at the wheel, wet clay in your hands, learning to throw pottery. Check the website for upcoming class openings. Don't have time for a class? Stop by the showroom and pick up some one-of-a-kind ceramic souvenirs! I'm personally fond of the piggy (peeg!) banks. Visit the original location of Pal's Sudden Service, opened in 1956. What began as a local fast food joint has since become internationally recognized as a model for leadership and employee development in the food industry and beyond. My personal favorites: For breakfast, a large cheddar round, gravy biscuits, and peachy tea. Lunch, dinner, and any other time, go for a sauce burger, frenchy fry, and strawberry milkshake (aka, the thickest shake you've ever had in your life). Bonus recommendation: Dr. Enuf, a soft drink bottled in Johnson City, TN.

Folk Arts

Penland School of Craft offers SO MUCH MORE than I detail in this guide. They are preserving folk crafts of Appalachia and fostering a new generation of creative artisans building on those historic foundations. Take your time to explore their website to see all the programs they offer.

Note: You can stay on the grounds of Penland while participating in their workshops. I recommend this for the sake of convenience and building relationships with your fellow artists. Also, the grounds are gorgeous, nestled in the mountains of Southern Appalachia. If you prefer to stay elsewhere, I have a recommendation below.

Penland School of Craft
@amyisgoingplaces
Penland School of Craft is a residential program, with workshops as short as a weekend to as long as 8 weeks. Study photography, textile arts, papermaking, woodworking, ceramics, glassblowing, iron work, and more in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina! Each workshop concludes with an opportunity for you to show your work. Notes: REGISTER EARLY. Plan your Penland experiences at least 4-6 months in advance. Penland courses are open to students of all skill levels. Students must be 18 years or older. Most students choose to live on the grounds during their workshop, but you can choose to stay elsewhere and commute in for your workshops. If you're so inclined, you can receive university course credit for your Penland experience. Check Penland's website for details on this opportunity. NOTE: Penland School of Craft was heavily impacted by the devastation of Hurricane Helene that swept through Southern Appalachia on September 27, 2024. They are working to restore their property and resume classes in 2025, which will start a month later than originally planned. Registration for 2025 classes and workshops will open November 15, 2024. Please check their Facebook page linked below and website for most recent updates and to sign up for 2025 classes and workshops!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
US native. Former resident of Romania. Current solo female globe trotter. I've ventured to more than a dozen countries across four continents as part of group tours, volunteer work, solo travel, studying abroad, and teaching internationally. I lived for over a year in Romania, many years in Tennessee, and several months in England. My travel style is slow, spontaneous, and - shall we say - richly flavorful. I prefer to stay longer lengths in places instead of having a whirlwind sightseeing venture. I'll skip the chain restaurants for a hole-in-the-wall café any day of the week. I prefer a loose itinerary and remain open to what each day brings. My favorite things to do and see as I travel are... - EAT - Try whatever is local. Order the special of the day. Talk with the restaurant staff. - WALK - It encourages me to slow down, notice, and get a feel for community. - HIKE - I'm a lazy hiker. By "hike," I mean a few hours at a slow pace. - MUSEUMS - Spend an afternoon. Read the descriptions on exhibits. Talk with the docents. Buy something in the giftshop. - CHURCHES - I'm fascinated by the various ways people have worshipped the God of the Bible over centuries and across borders. Many older churches are also museums or tourist-friendly spaces. Some additionally hold regular liturgical services. - CASTLES - Castles, fortresses, palaces, big ol' houses: these places transport me back in time. I imagine the people who built, lived in, and defended them. What would they think of how we now live? If this kind of travel sounds ideal to you, hit the Contact Me button! I'd love to help you experience slower, more meaningful travel. We'll discuss tips for how to make the most of your trip, with low stress, reasonable safety, affordability, and lots of fun. Book one of my custom services, and we'll work together to get you wheels up on your next adventure! Follow me to easily access all the resources I create.
