Located just a short drive from Lexington, Kentucky, Red River Gorge Geological Area provides a premier outdoor hiking and climbing spot and a great space to escape the city.

How to Get There

There are two nearby local airports to fly into nearby Red River Gorge. Louisville International has the most options for flights and availability. If you're flying in, you will be able to rent a car upon arrival.

Depending on where you're arriving from, driving might be the most convenient option. I highly recommend having a car to explore the area.

My family and I explored a large section of red river gorge while completing many of the shorter hikes available. Great views of the surrounding area and would make for the perfect fall foliage destination. They boast more than 60 miles of hiking trails suitable for all skill levels.

If you're not super into hiking but still want to enjoy the views of the park, drive the Red River Gorge Scenic Byway. This road loops through the entire Red River Gorge Area giving you views of above and in the gorge.

Relatively short and easy hike out to the top of chimney rock. Absolutely gorgeous views and worthwhile.

Sky Bridge Arch

My personal favorite hike that we did in the Red River Gorge. A 0.7 round trip hike. We went over the arch first and then loops back up very steep steps. You can also do this as an out and back to the top of the arch which is more friendly to those with difficulty with stairs/steep inclines

Take an unique ride on the Natural Bridge Sky lift above the Natural Bridge State Resort Park to see scenic views of the area. The lift is a bit on the steep side so if you're afraid of heights, I wouldn't recommend it. There is an alternative option to hike up to the top.

Ride the unique skylift up to the top of the resort for great views and a short hike.
