5 Yummy Spots for Gelato in Florence
The invention of gelato
During Florence’s Renaissance, frozen desserts like "sorbetto" became a luxury for the elite.
Gelato, as we know it today, emerged in the late 16th century thanks to Bernardo Buontalenti, Catherine de’ Medici’s architect.
To impress Spanish ambassadors, he created a new dessert with milk, egg, honey, lemon, sugar, ice, wine, salt, and bergamot and orange, resulting in a smooth, creamy texture.
Buontalenti even designed the tools and infrastructure for ice preservation in Florence.
And the rest is history!
