Full Guide to Albania- Beginners Guide!
Destination 1
Shkodër, nestled in northern Albania, is a city steeped in history against the backdrop of scenic Shkoder Lake. With influences from Ottoman and Venetian eras, explore the well-preserved Rozafa Castle and wander through the vibrant Old Town. The city serves as a gateway to the Albanian Alps, making it a perfect base for outdoor enthusiasts.
Our trip was supposed to not include Shkoder. Our plan was to travel from Budva, Montenegro to Lumi I Shales, Albania. However, we realised that the route wasn't possible. The Lumi I Shales and Komani Lake (which is the next destination) are settled in the north Mountains of Albania. There is only two times that the boats leave in the day. Meant that if we travelled straight from Budva, meant we would miss out boat transfer. So obviously we spend a night in Shkoder, and one less night in Budva.
We would recommend if you are staying in Shkoder, stay for 2 nights. We only stayed a night, so we weren't able to see everything in the city. You can organise a transfer here to Komani Lake. They pick you up early in the morning at the Hotel Rozafa. The journey costs around 8 Euros, leaving at 6:45. This takes around 2 hours.
If you are planning on staying here for 2 nights, here below are some recommendations we visited or wished we visited.

Destination 2
Lumi i Shalës and Komani Lake form a mesmerising scenic duo in northern Albania. Lumi i Shalës, or Shala River, carves through dramatic canyons, offering exhilarating boat rides. The journey along Komani Lake is a tranquil escape, surrounded by towering mountains and mirror-like waters. Both destinations showcase Albania's natural beauty, attracting adventurers seeking serene landscapes and pristine waters.
When venturing to Komani Lake, essential planning ensures a smooth journey. Arrange a transfer from Shkoder to Komani Lake Tunnel, the hub for boat transfers. To fully experience the mesmerizing Lumi i Shalës, pre-book a boat transfer to Guri i Lekes, a delightful accommodation option with friendly hosts. Boat departures at 9 am and 3 pm offer flexibility. Opt for a brief stay of 1 or 2 nights, reveling in the natural beauty after the day-trippers disperse. Engage in invigorating hikes, savour the cold river, and explore the lagoons for a serene escape.
Helpful tips for your journey:
1. Choose a backpack over a suitcase for convenience.
2. Pack snacks, as options are limited along the river.
3. Carry sufficient cash for food, transport, and potential cash-only accommodations.
4. Familiarise yourself with transfer schedules to plan your next destination.
Maximise your time by seizing opportunities like the Komani Lake Ferry. We capitalised on a 6-hour wait in Koman by taking the ferry to Fierza, enjoying breathtaking views before our 4 pm transfer to Tirana. A practical and scenic interlude, this ferry adventure adds an enriching layer to your Komani Lake experience.
Destination 3
Tirana, Albania's vibrant capital, seamlessly blends history and modernity. The city features colourful buildings adorned with street art, creating a unique urban landscape. Skanderbeg Square stands as a testament to its rich history, while the Blloku district offers a lively mix of cafes, shops, and nightlife. Tirana's architecture reflects Ottoman, communist, and contemporary influences. The New Bazaar provides a taste of local flavors, and the Bunk'Art Museum explores Albania's history in a former nuclear bunker. Explore parks, cafes, and lively street culture to truly experience Tirana's dynamic character.
Tirana is one of the most underrated cities and one of my favourites. I would suggest 3 to 4 nights here. I city is very walk able and there is plenty to see and do. Having some of the best food I've ever eaten. Albania is a very cheap country. It takes Euros and Albania Lek. However, you can only get Lek within Albania. So my advice would be to take out some Albania Lek as soon as possible, as you will save money. We didn't have the time or chance to, so we got Albania Lek out at an ATM in Tirana, where we withdrew £100 worth of Lek. This way your money will go further. ATM's do have a withdrawal charge though.

We stayed here, and would definitely recommend here. Very cheap, clean, looks good, and great location. However, there are hundreds of hotels and Airbnb's in Tirana all for very decent prices.
Destination 4
Ksamil, a coastal gem in southern Albania, enchants visitors with its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. Nestled along the Albanian Riviera, Ksamil offers a serene retreat, boasting secluded coves and vibrant marine life. The highlight is the trio of small islands just offshore, accessible by boat, enhancing the scenic beauty. The beaches, such as Mirror Beach and the main Ksamil Beach, invite relaxation and water activities. While the town is relatively quiet, its charm lies in the unspoiled nature, providing a tranquil escape for those seeking a peaceful seaside getaway.
Ksamil has some of the bluest water and best beaches I've been to. However, a lot of the beaches are covered by Beach Lounge Clubs, where deck chairs can be quite pricey. Also be aware that Ksamil closes most of its shops, restaurants and more from Late October until around March. I would suggest staying here for around 3 to 5 nights.

Sarande, Butrint National Park, Gjirokaster and the Blue Eye are places outside of Ksamil. There isn't loads to do in Ksamil apart from enjoy the beautiful beaches. However, some of the place outside of Ksamil are definitely worth visiting. Sarande and Butrint are places you can visit for the day or half day, and are only 10 minutes away on the bus. Each bus journey costs 150 Lek, which is about £1.40. But The blue eye and Gjirokaster you can book a tour to visit both in one day. This tour is around £90 per person, and is a 10 hour tour. However, you could do this yourself through the buses. A mini bus from Sarande will visit the Blue Eye, and the same minibus will pick you up later and take you to Gjirokaster. Each minibus journey costs around £10, which is still a lot cheaper than if you do the tour. The last bus back to Sarande from Gjirokaster is 4: 30 pm. But make sure you check with the driver what time it leaves, and get there early. As the bus will leave if it is full. If you have time in Gjirokaster, make sure you visit the Castle, to learn about the history of Albania and to see the incredible views.
