Attractions

Waterfront Park
@objectsinmotion
Right near the airport, this park and splash pad could be your first or last stop to get some pent up energy out.

San Diego Zoo
@objectsinmotion
The San Diego Zoo (and SD Safari Park in Escondido) are world renowned for the many animals and enclosures they maintain. It is also home to many exotic and endangered plants. Take advantage of the free buses through out the park to see a large portion of the park from the comfort of a double decker bus and then let the kids run around the newly opened kids area (best bus seats are lower deck, right side). Signup to feed the giraffes for only $15 per group Free entry for Active Duty Service Members. During the month of October Kids Admission is free (this means big weekend crowds).

Fiesta Island Park
@objectsinmotion
No trip to San Diego is complete without a stop at the beach! If you are looking for calm kid friendly waters, this is the place! Scope out a spot near a porta-potty for kids and enjoy watching the water craft. The inland side of the island will have calmer waters while the outer side of the island will have some slightly bigger waves (although still pretty docile).

Balboa Park
@objectsinmotion
There is so much to do in Balboa park and it’s lovely to have an open, relatively car free area for kids to roam free. Beautiful architecture surrounds you with fun places for kids to climb and play. I recommend getting lunch at the Panama 66 sculpture garden or the Japanese tea garden.

Grand Ole BBQ Y Asado

Simple decor but a great outdoor area with no frills. If you’re willing to drive the larger property in East County has more activities.

Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station
@objectsinmotion
The water features inside and out keep kids entertained, and if that doesn’t work, there’s tons of other great activities in Liberty Station.

94th Aero Squadron Restaurant & Events
@objectsinmotion
This old school aviation themed eatery is right next to an active runway. With nice outdoor seating and a great Sunday brunch there is lots to do with littles here.

Flap Your Jacks
@objectsinmotion
This is a great brunch place to bring kids. The concept is similar to Korean BBQ, but for pancakes. You order your batters, mix ins, and syrup and make your own creations. You can also order from the kitchen if that’s not your speed.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I am a Southern California native, mother of two, military spouse and travel lover currently located in Naples, Italy. I’ve lived and visited many different places and I hope that my travels will help you plan your next great adventure! My guides focus on travel that the whole family can enjoy and feature some of the great places the military has sent us, as well as our own travels. Having lived in many different places, I have local knowledge of a wide variety of places. Two of my favorite recent travels are a month long family trip to Australia and Singapore and a multi-generational Caribbean cruise. I love that some of my kids first core memories will be of our international travels. It is so heart warming to watch them make friends at a foreign playground and having an interaction with a person that doesn’t speak their same language. Now, living in Italy we have many more opportunities for travel, both throughout Europe and locally near Naples, Pompeii, and the Amalfi Coast. We have enjoyed discovering new foods, exploring language and culture. My youngest has an egg allergy that we manage so food and language intertwine often.
