Taiwan For Families: Practical Travel Tips and Planning Guide
Best Time To Visit
The best time to visit Taiwan is from October to April, during the autumn and spring seasons. The weather is mild and dry, making it perfect for outdoor activities and exploration. If you prefer cooler temperatures, December to February is ideal, as Taiwan experiences its coldest months. Additionally, if you time your visit right, you can enjoy the beautiful cherry blossom season, which typically lasts from February to early April.
I avoid the summer months (June to August) due to the intense heat and high humidity, which may not be ideal, especially if you’re traveling with children. The hot, sticky weather can make spending time outdoors uncomfortable, and there is also a greater risk of encountering typhoons.
📌Tip: Taiwan’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s wise to check a weather app about a week before your trip. No matter the season, packing a light rain jacket is always a good idea—just in case.
Airport Tips
PROHIBITED ITEMS
When traveling through Taiwan airports, be aware that sniffer dogs will be present upon arrival to detect prohibited items. Bringing plant and meat products into Taiwan is strictly prohibited, including airline meals containing these items. Ensure you avoid carrying any such items to avoid complications during your travel.
LUCKY LAND DRAW
After passing through immigration and collecting your luggage, be sure to visit the Lucky Land booth for a chance to win up to NT$5000! This exciting campaign, organized by Taiwan’s Tourism, is available to foreign travelers until June 30, 2025. To participate, register at the link below within 7 days before your arrival.
📌Tip: When registering, opt for the E-Ticket option (Easycard, iPass, iCash2.0) rather than the accommodation voucher. These cards are widely accepted for transportation, convenience stores, and other shops throughout Taiwan.
Transportation
Taiwan offers an efficient and user-friendly transportation system. It’s highly recommended to get an Easycard for convenient travel on the MRT, buses, and even in some shops and convenience stores. We purchased our Easycards at a 7-Eleven store in downtown Taipei, where we found cute Sanrio-themed ones that we now keep as souvenirs. You might also check the 7-Eleven store at the airport for themed Easycards.
You can easily top up your Easycard at train stations and convenience stores throughout Taiwan. However, Easycards are not accepted on the High-Speed Rail (HSR). HSR tickets can be purchased at train stations or through Klook, which often offers discounted rates.
Kids under 6 can ride the MRT for free, but if your child is over 115 cm, be prepared to show an ID if requested. For buses, children under 6 can pay half fares upon presenting an ID. Since buses do not give out change, it’s a good idea to carry coins or get an Easycard for your child to ensure hassle-free travel.
📌Remember, there is a unique public rule you must follow when traveling by public transit in Taiwan: no eating or drinking is permitted! The only exception is long train rides such as the HSR.
Money and Currency Exchange
In Taiwan, the official currency is the New Taiwan Dollar (NTD). Due to better rates, it is advisable to exchange USD for NTD. The Bank of Taiwan counter at the airport offers competitive rates, identical to those posted on their website, making it a convenient option upon arrival.
If you plan to exchange money, note that money changers are only available at the airport. For many tourists, withdrawing cash from ATMs is a popular option. Taiwan has numerous ATMs that accept international debit cards, and major credit cards are also widely accepted. However, since some establishments only accept cash, it’s recommended to always have some money on hand during your trip.

Bonus Insights
PLUG & VOLTAGE
Taiwan typically uses Type A and Type B plugs with a standard voltage of 110V and a frequency of 60Hz. Be sure to check if your devices need an adapter. While most hotels provide adapters, it’s recommended to bring your own when traveling.
TOILET BIDET
Unlike in some other Asian countries, bidets are not commonly found in hotels in Taiwan. Most toilets are standard and do not have bidet functionalities. However, if you’re lucky, you might find a hotel with a Japanese-style toilet. If you prefer using a bidet and can’t find one, consider carrying a travel bidet or a portable water dipper for your personal hygiene needs.
TAX REFUND
Foreign travelers who make purchases of at least NT$2,000 on the same day from the same designated stores with the “Taiwan Tax Refund” label are eligible to request a tax refund. The store will provide you with a form, which you can scan at the E-VAT kiosks in the airport to claim your refund before departure.
SANDFLIES DURING SUMMER MONTHS
When traveling during warmer or summer months in Taiwan, it’s important to be cautious of sandflies, especially if you’re traveling with kids. These insects are commonly found on beaches and in parks. To avoid their bites and ensure your vacation isn’t disrupted, it’s recommended to apply insect repellent to exposed areas. Additionally, wearing long sleeves and pants can provide further protection against bites.
