Jiufen is a charming, historic town nestled in the mountains of northern Taiwan, known for its winding streets, traditional tea houses, and breathtaking views. For fans of Studio Ghibli, Jiufen holds special appeal, as it is believed to have inspired the magical setting of the film Spirited Away. The town’s lantern-lit alleyways and traditional architecture mirror the whimsical, otherworldly ambiance seen in the movie.
Due to its popularity, Jiufen can become quite crowded, especially during the day when day-trippers from Taipei flood its narrow streets. For those seeking to experience the town’s quieter, more mystical side, staying overnight is highly recommended. The evenings offer a more peaceful atmosphere, allowing visitors to soak in Jiufen’s charm without the bustling daytime crowds.
Recently, we had the chance to visit Jiufen and opted to stay overnight—and it was the best decision ever. Traveling with a kid and doing everything DIY, we found it not only doable but also incredibly rewarding. If you’re planning a similar trip, this guide will help you navigate Jiufen like we did, making the most of your experience in this enchanting destination.
Join us as we explore Jiufen and Shifen on an unforgettable overnight stay! From lantern-lit alleyways to stunning views and delicious eats, we’ll show you how we did it DIY-style with a kid. Watch now for tips and inspiration!
The best time to visit Jiufen is on weekdays to avoid the crowds that flood the town on weekends and holidays. For a more relaxed experience, plan your trip during off-peak seasons and avoid major Taiwanese holidays, such as Lunar New Year and long weekends, as these periods can make the narrow streets of Jiufen very congested.
🧣What To Wear
When visiting Jiufen, wear season-appropriate clothing, but always pack a light rain jacket as it's located in the mountains and frequent rain is common. Comfortable shoes are a must since the town is full of steep stairs and narrow alleys, making walking a bit challenging at times. Layers are also a good idea, especially during cooler months.
🚊How To Reach Jiufen
Depending on your starting point, traveling to Jiufen via public transportation is straightforward with proper planning and time management. Buses and trains generally run on schedule and are usually punctual, so be sure to check Google Maps for routes and timetables. If you’re departing from Taipei Main Station, you can take a local train to Ruifang Station. From there, transfer to bus 788 to reach Jiufen Old Street. Alternatively, you can take the direct bus 965 from Ximending, which goes straight to Jiufen Old Street. In our experience, this is the most convenient option compared to taking the train. The travel time is approximately 1 hour.
Jiufen offers many traditional Taiwanese Minsu (similar to bed and breakfasts), but if you’re traveling with family, Jiufen Chiu Chunt Dint Inn stands out. It’s located near the entrance of Jiufen Old Street, which is highly convenient, especially considering the town’s steep stairs and narrow alleyways. This location helps avoid the challenge of navigating these paths with kids or elderly family members.
The rooms are spacious and clean and feature Japanese-style toilets. The friendly and accommodating staff further enhance the stay. Additionally, there’s a 7-Eleven close by, perfect for grabbing a late-night snack. Do note that most Minsu, including this one, do not have elevators, so it’s best to pack light with just a small luggage or an overnight bag.
Jiufen Old Street is a charming, mountainside village in northern Taiwan, known for its winding alleys, traditional tea houses, and stunning views. Its narrow streets are packed with street food vendors, souvenir shops, and Japanese-inspired architecture, which is said to have inspired scenes from Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away. For Ghibli fans or those looking to escape the daytime crowds, staying overnight in Jiufen is highly recommended. As the evening sets in, the town transforms with glowing lanterns and a serene atmosphere that feels almost magical. Be sure to sample local delicacies and visit a cozy teahouse for an authentic Taiwanese tea experience, adding to the enchanting ambiance.

If you’re looking for a way to escape the daytime crowds in Jiufen, I highly recommend visiting Shifen Old Street. To get there from Jiufen, simply take bus 788 and alight at Ruifang Station. From there, you can take the Pingxi line train to Shifen Old Street, a journey that takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Keep in mind that the train only passes once every hour, so timing is crucial. Using Google Maps to check the timetable and routes can be helpful.
Shifen Old Street is a delightful railway town that perfectly blends history, culture, and charm. Known for its iconic sky lanterns, bustling shops, and scenic train tracks, it offers a unique experience for visitors of all ages. Our child especially enjoyed the sky lantern activity, where we released lanterns with our wishes into the sky—a truly memorable moment. As you explore, be sure to try the local street food, particularly the rice-stuffed chicken sold right by the train station. This flavorful snack is a must-try and adds to the authentic Shifen experience!

After exploring Shifen, you can easily return to Jiufen for more adventures. Alternatively, if you have extra time, consider visiting Houtong Cat Village, which is also on the same train line. On our last trip, we chose not to visit Houtong because we wanted to spend more time in Jiufen, as it was our first time there. We also opted to take a cab back to Jiufen to save time, which cost us NT$1000 and took approximately 35 minutes.
If you love cats, Houtong Cat Village is a must-visit. Just hop on the train from Shifen Station to Houtong Station, and you’ll find yourself in a quirky little village where cats roam freely. The place has a fun, laid-back vibe with plenty of photo ops, cat-themed shops, and cozy cafes to unwind. It’s a perfect spot to enjoy some time with adorable felines!
A Mei Tea House is one of Jiufen’s most recognizable spots, with its classic architecture and beautiful views. Here, you can take part in a traditional Taiwanese tea ceremony, learning the careful steps involved in preparing and savoring tea. While the experience is a bit on the pricier side, around $NT300 per person, the setting and cultural immersion make it a memorable part of any visit to Jiufen.
A popular dessert stand in Jiufen, A-Zhu Peanut Ice Cream Roll offers a refreshing and delicious treat. This dessert features a thin crepe filled with creamy scoops of ice cream, topped with finely shaved peanuts, and a hint of fresh cilantro for an unexpected flavor twist. It’s the perfect blend of sweet and savory, making it an ideal snack to enjoy while exploring the old streets of Jiufen. Definitely worth trying if you’re looking for something unique and local!
Located right at the entrance of Jiufen Old Street, this stall offers a variety of delicious pastries. It’s the perfect spot to grab a sweet treat while taking a break from exploring Jiufen. With its convenient location, it’s a must-visit for anyone looking to satisfy their sweet tooth!
This well-loved street stall is famous for its giant squid and cuttlefish. The smoky, rich aroma draws in both tourists and locals alike, while the tender, juicy texture keeps them coming back for more. With its freshly grilled seafood and perfectly seasoned flavors, it’s no wonder this spot is a must-try in Jiufen.
For stinky tofu lovers in Jiufen, this spot is a must-visit! Known for its unique twist on the classic Taiwanese dish, the stinky tofu here is served soaked in a flavorful soup, allowing the tofu to absorb all the savory, fermented flavors. While it’s not crispy, it’s incredibly soft on the inside and offers the perfect balance of that signature fermented kick. The laid-back atmosphere makes it an ideal stop while exploring Jiufen's narrow streets.
