Learn to Make Pierogi with a Local in Krakow
Booking Details
We found this cooking class while scrolling through Airbnb Experiences. The reviews there and on TripAdvisor were all very positive, so we knew we had to give it a shot! The company that runs this is Krakow Urban Tours, they have several other tours throughout the city as well. We would definitely use them again in the future.
What we loved about this cooking class is that it was smaller in size than others we've done before. The tour is meant for groups up to 6 people and lasts 4 hours.
The price included: Our guided tour, ingredients for the pierogi, beer, and coffee & tea. Overall I think this was a really great value!
*This cooking class is vegetarian friendly, we made Potato & Cheese Pierogi only.
Beginning Tour
We met our group outside a bookshop on Dluga Street. It was the 3 of us, a couple from France and our host. After introductions our guide walked us to a local market to walk around and buy the ingredients for our cooking class. This was one of the really great parts of this tour, the market she took us to was somewhere a tourist would probably never know to go.. Sabina, our host, taught us how to ask for the various ingredients we were going to need at the market and then had us each order from the different vendors. It was really great to interact with the locals and learn some of the language. She also made sure to get some Oscypek, a traditional smoked cheese made from sheep's milk in the mountains, and some dessert for us as well.
When we were done purchasing all of the ingredients from the local vendors we walked to her apartment, where she would be hosting the cooking class. Once we got back to her house she made us feel right at home. It honestly felt like hanging out with friends rather than a group of strangers, which makes the experience that much more special.
Time to Cook!
First, she walked us through all of the steps and measurements. Then we all began taking turns with the different parts of the prep, mixing and cooking. We broke up into smaller groups for this, some stayed at the stove beginning to cook, the others worked on getting the dough prepared.
Once the dough was rolled out and the filling was ready she showed us the proper way to fill and close them. They boys could have used a little more practice, I bet you can tell which ones they attempted at closing!
Look at that...I mean we're basically professionals! She made sure we all got a copy of the recipe so we could take our new skill home, the BEST souvenir if you ask us!
Added Touch
This group truly goes above and beyond to make these experiences unforgettable. Besides taking us off the beaten path to interact with the locals and then back to their own homes, which was all greatly appreciated. The snacks and local beer provided was such a nice added touch to an already very fun cooking class. As we were wrapping up she gave us all city maps that their group put together of things to see, restaurants and local shops (an added bonus they tried to pick sustainable minded places)... Seriously how great is that?! She recommended a few things to bring home and where we could find a Polish dough board like we had just been using.
Overall, it is a really great choice if you like to learn how the locals live when traveling! We hope this inspires you to get off the beaten path and find an exciting experience much like this one!
