Faroe Island | 7 Days Itinerary

Faroe Island | 7 Days Itinerary

The Faroe Islands are the kind of place you would visit for a maximum of a week, as it is an expensive destination, much like Iceland. Renowned for its spectacular sea cliff formations, puffins, and bird watching, this archipelago is perfect for any nature explorer. Although not as large as Iceland, the Faroe Islands consist of 18 main islands, some of which are easily reachable while others require a private helicopter or special permission. It is necessary to get a car rental to get around, as public transportation is infrequent, and without a car, you may be limited in terms of places you can visit. This itinerary is based on a car road trip. Tips: No cash is needed as everything can be paid for with a credit card. Check the ferry schedule online at https://www.ssl.fo/en/home. Supermarkets are closed on Sundays, except for Mylnan. Always verify the opening hours of takeaways and restaurants on their Facebook pages, as the opening hours on Google Maps may not be up to date. Most cafes and restaurants are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. There aren't many food places outside of the capital Tórshavn, so do plan for your meals, be it eating at cafes or restaurants or simply stocking on basic food necessities from the supermarkets. Purchase alcoholic beverages and soda at the airport for a lower price. Make sure to buy them before leaving the airport! DAY 2- Suðuroy

Stay another night in Tórshavn since the port to Suðuroy is located there. Suðuroy is the southernmost island in the Faroe Islands. To reach Suðuroy, you must take the Smyril ferry, which offers multiple daily departures from Tórshavn. The ferry journey takes approximately 2 hours. You can find the ferry's timetable here.

Points of interest on Suðuroy include:

Day 3- Fossa, Kalsoy and Gjógv

On your way to Klaksvík, make a little detour to Fossa, which means waterfall.

If you have a drone, capturing a shot from above will reveal the breathtaking two tiers of the waterfall.

Klaksvík is the second-largest city in the Faroe Islands, and the main reason for our visit to this city is primarily because of Kalsoy. Make sure to check the ferry schedule from Klaksvík to Syðradalur, the ferry port of Kalsoy.

Tip: Arrive early at the ferry port, especially during the peak season, to secure a spot if you're travelling with a rental car. We arrived an hour in advance and parked our car while we explored Klaksvík town.

Don't miss the fish & chips food truck near the port!

Gjógv, which means 'gorge' in Faroese, derives its name from the renowned sea-filled gorge that characterizes this town. We made the decision to spend a night here.

DAY 4- Gongutúrur/ Hvithamar and Saksun

After checking out from Gjaargardur Guesthouse, we drove about 5-10 minutes to Gongutúrur/ Hvithamar.

Day 5 & 6 - Vagar

Vagar which is the same island as the airport has a few key attractions, so we decided to stay two nights

Points of interest in Vagar include:

The port for Mykines departures is located in Vagar. Mykines Island is a paradise for birds, and if you wish to explore the island, you can only do so through a guided tour, which will cost you DKK400 (~USD$57 as of June '23). Please note that the fee may have increased over the years.

The only way to reach Mykines is by taking a private boat. You can check the schedule and book your ticket in advance

During your visit, you'll have the opportunity to see an abundance of puffins and other birds. We personally observed them at Gjógv and found it challenging to justify spending more than USD$100 for both of us on a 2-5km guided hike.

We opted to take the Sørvágur-Mykines boat trip because we wanted to take a closer view of the sea stacks called 'Draganir' and the islet 'Tindhólmur' from the water. The return boat trip costs DKK120 (~USD$17) per person.

Slave Cliff (Lake Above the Ocean)
@underrated_wonders
You'll need to obtain permission by paying DKK200 ~USD$30. Along the trail, you'll encounter several viewpoints, including the lake and the waterfall (Bøsdalafossur). The most captivating viewpoint, in our opinion, is located on the cliff on the opposite side of the waterfall. It's definitely worth taking a little detour to experience this magnificent sight.

Day 7- Vagar

We flew back in the morning to Oslo! If you have more time, you can always move some of the attractions in Vagar to the last day since the airport is nearby.

Hope this information helps in your planning to visit this amazing island! I wish you good weather as we had amazing weather during our visit in June. Safe travels!
