A Weekend in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

A Weekend in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

When I think of Cambodia, I picture Angkor Wat. However, now that I’ve been lucky enough to travel to Phnom Penh, I’ve learned much more about Cambodia’s history and all that this beautiful country has to offer. This capital city provides affordable yet luxurious accommodations, a vibrant food scene, and history that everyone should learn about.

Tips

Phnom Penh gets a bit of a bad rep for being "boring" or "skippable" - but I beg to disagree.  While it doesn't hold the same allure as a lot of cities, especially in Southeast Asia, it's worth a visit.  The history alone warrants a trip, along with the vibrant neighborhoods and rooftop bars.  Some other things to note include:

● Bring cash, especially for small items.  You can pay in USD or Cambodian Riel (KHR), though if you pay in USD, you'll likely get Riel as change.

● Your cash has to be in good shape - no rips, markings, or folds were generally accepted.

● It's more expensive than you think. Not nearly as much as a US big city, but we went to Cambodia from Vietnam (which is very inexpensive), so the sticker shock was real.

● Public transportation wasn't very available, so be ready to take tuktuks or Grab (the Uber of SE Asia) most places.

● 3 Days and 2 Nights in Phnom Penh (or a long weekend) is truly all you need here.

What to Do

As the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh is a vibrant city that offers a mix of rich history, culture, and lively street life. You can explore historical landmarks, enjoy delicious Cambodian cuisine, and experience the city's dynamic atmosphere.  Some other things to do include:

● Visit the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda to admire stunning architecture and Cambodian art.

● Learn about the country's history at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields.   Both of these activities can be very heavy and take a toll on your emotions, so plan accordingly.

● Take a sunset cruise on the Mekong River for beautiful views of the city and surrounding landscapes.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Hi! I'm Bethany, an explorer with a passport stamped in 52 countries. Having called three different nations home, I've cultivated a deep appreciation for the cultures our world offers. By day, I navigate a full-time job outside the travel sphere, which fuels my passion for crafting concise yet insightful guides to the remarkable places I've been lucky enough to travel to. Embarking on a journey with me means embracing a blend of adventure, relaxation, and immersion in local customs. As a solo female traveler, I've ventured through 21 countries, and I'm here to share insights on safety and the empowering experience of navigating the globe alone. A glimpse into my roots reveals an American spirit born in Seoul, nurtured in Germany during my childhood, and blossomed in the United States. A decade in the vibrant DC area enriched my life with a wealth of experiences that I'm eager to recommend. Now, I find myself based in Denver, Colorado, brimming with tips for skiing and snowboarding in the winter, and hiking and camping in the summer. Whether it's strolling through historic cityscapes or savoring the diverse flavors of the world, I'm an enthusiast for walking tours and foodie adventures. Balancing a demanding full-time job with an insatiable wanderlust, I make it a goal to take at least three international trips a year, and monthly domestic trips. Join me on this adventure, and let's explore the world together—one destination at a time!
