Here’s a little 4-day guide I put together with all my favourite spots in Chiang Mai. I’d highly recommend going from Thursday to Monday so you can catch all the nice weekend markets – they’re the best part! I’ve also shared what I love about each place and some tips to make things easier. Enjoy :)
If you have more time, you can consider signing up for one of the full-day trips to explore the areas outside Chiang Mai.
I stayed in Nimman area twice – it’s such a convenient and lively area with plenty of cafés, shops, and it’s super close to One Nimman (a great mall with a weekend market). It’s perfect for family trips because we can all split up and do our own thing, but still stay nearby. Here are the 2 hotels that I've stayed at and loved!
They offer a complimentary breakfast every morning, which is perfect if you’re heading out on an early full-day trip. The team is super warm, helpful, and hardworking – they're there from 7am at breakfast all the way into the evening! It’s just a 5-minute walk to One Nimman. My mom absolutely loves the hair wash (250 baht) next to the hotel, and the massage nearby is also a great deal – 350 baht for a 1-hour foot massage.
Located in One Nimman itself. Quite value for money for a restaurant in a mall + we love everything we ordered. Go early for dinner cos the queue is quite mad.
If you’re craving Chinese food after all the Thai food, this spot in One Nimman is perfect. It passed our parents' high standards for Chinese cuisine, so you know it’s good!
Sister brand of Ginger Farm (More expensive since this is more like a proper restaurant). Our family love the steamed seabass with spicy chilli and lime sauce. Beautiful interior too!
The highlight of this place is the small but super Instagrammable garden. Arrive early or book ahead and request to sit in Zone 1 or 2 for the best garden view. We sat in Zone 3, and unfortunately, there wasn’t much of a view. Do also note that the menu leans more towards traditional Thai food rather than typical café fare.
Cute cafe with everything chocolate! Love the hot chocolate and chocolate cake here. For the drinks, you can choose different chocolate %, ranging from 33% to 80% depending on your preference. I like dark chocolate so 80% was perfect for me!
A charming artist village with lots of cute shops and cafes. Many shops offer quick workshops like jewellery making, leather crafting, and painting. We did a papier-mâché painting workshop, which was about 160 bath (SGD 6) and spent about 40 mins at the workshop. I highly recommend to sign up for a workshop - it really adds to the experience! Plan to spend about 2-3 hours exploring, especially if you take part in one.
Jing Jai Weekend Market is open only on Saturdays and Sundays from 6:30 am to 1 pm. It’s a large, well-organized market with lots of interesting craft and fashion stalls, plus a few air-conditioned shops if you need a break from the heat. Go early, as it gets pretty hot by noon. Lunch at the market is part of the fun – the food area is sheltered, but I recommend heading there around 11 am since the best food tends to sell out quickly as it gets closer to 1 pm.
One Nimman is a lively mall with great food options and a variety of unique stalls. On Friday to Sunday evenings, the White Market pops up, offering a mix of crafts and fashion – perfect for a relaxed browse!
I prefer the Saturday Night Market to the Sunday Night Market (it's more crowded and walkway between the stalls are narrower). Also noticed that some of the vendors are there for both. I'd say you can visit here if you are bored on a Sunday evening and have no plans.
A full day tour covering quite a few places outside of Chiang Mai city. My favourite spots are Tongma Studio & Ironwood Cafe, Mon Jam, and Doi Suthep Temple (will be nice for sunset). Huay Tung Tao Lake and Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden may be quite underwhelming if you don't like nature. Be prepared for long drives between each spot, as you'll spend quite a bit of time in the car.
A full day tour that covers the Mae Kampong Village and nearby area. Favourite stops are Lanna Wild and the Giant. Be prepared for the winding mountain roads – they might make you feel a bit car sick.
