My ultimate food guide for Málaga, Spain
Tapas and pinchos/pintxos
The culture of tapas and pinchos is sth that can not be separated from Spain and Spanish people. They even have a verb "tapear/ir de tapas". that literally means going to eat tapas/spending time while eating tapas.
For those who do not know the difference between tapas and pinchos, let me explain.👇Most of the restaurants offer both types.
Tapas
The price can vary from 4-9€/piece and usually, restaurants offer different kinds.
Pinchos
Pinchos are mainly represented by bread with some toppings and multiple layers, therefore the bread is simply pierced with a toothpick. These are similar to canapes, so to speak "one bites".
The price can vary from 1,5- 4€/piece and usually, restaurants offer as well a variety of different kinds.
Paella
Paella originates from Valencia, but it is usually prepared across most of Spain, especially in coastal areas. The main ingredients are rice, tomatoes, peppers, broth, and either chicken, seafood, fish, or a mixture of all. Paella is usually decorated with lemon quarters for a final touch just right before serving.
Fish
You cannot miss the opportunity to try the local fish. The typical restaurants which are located just a few meters from the sea are called Chiringuitos. The best restaurants based on multiple feedback are those in part of Málaga which is called El Palo.
The dish that is very typical is called Espeto - grilled skewer of mainly sardines. That is sth you should try by the sea among other specialties from the grill.
However, there is as well very good restaurant in the city centre.
Panaderías
While strolling around the city, I assure you you will at least once be enchanted with the amazing smell of local bakery shops. These places are called the Panaderías.
I definitely recommend stopping by and try some local or (in general) Spanish pastries, sweet or salty ones. The one typical for Malaga is a sweet little pastry with orange colour frosting which is called "Loca", quite sweet but indeed delicious.
Here are some places that we've tried.
Churros
Churros are typical of Spain and Portugal, but you can find them in general in all countries where the Spanish visited during their history of conquest.
Churro is a Deep-fried choux pastry (Flour, water, butter, eggs, salt) of a semi-sweet taste which is usually served with a cup of chocolate for dipping in. Must try for people who like sweets
Brunch places
I am quite a brunch person and therefore I am always trying to find some places while traveling. Here are some tips that were precisely discussed with Locals ;)
Restaurants BYOKO were recommended to me by 2 different locals, and therefore we have decided to try at least one of them, and honestly very good!!! They are working with locally sourced, most of the time bio ingredients, and you can indeed taste that.
