My ultimate food guide for Málaga, Spain

My ultimate food guide for Málaga, Spain

Barbora Cintava
It has been a lovely sunny month in Málaga (Andalusia), Spain. As I am a real "foodie", the first thing that I checked upon arrival and marked on the map were all the types of restaurants I wanted to visit. Later on, I tasted multiple ones as well as discussed the options with locals, and here the "price-friendly" list comes. 👇Below you can find our top picks, where we literally almost cried out of the "foodgasm" 😍 Moreover, I will introduce you to "must-try" dishes, Do not read when you are hungry!🤤 📌Save this guide to your bucketlist! 🎶And stay tunned for more itineraries to come! Tapas and pinchos/pintxos

The culture of tapas and pinchos is sth that can not be separated from Spain and Spanish people. They even have a verb "tapear/ir de tapas". that literally means going to eat tapas/spending time while eating tapas.

For those who do not know the difference between tapas and pinchos, let me explain.👇Most of the restaurants offer both types.

Tapas

Tapas are various small dishes, for eg. small salads, mini burgers, small tortillas, some local specialties, etc. that can be shared among friends, and family... My favorite ones are tortillas and patatas bravas.

The price can vary from 4-9€/piece and usually, restaurants offer different kinds.

Cortijo de Pepe

Excellent restaurant for tapas. If visiting this place, I do recommend trying their Ensaladilla rusa and croquettes. You wont't regret it.

El Refectorium Malagueta
@barboracintava96
This restaurant was recommended to me thanks to its tapa ensaladilla rusa - the mayonnaise salad with potatoes, carrots and in most of the time fish, either cod or tuna.

La Farola de Orellana

This restaurant is a favorite of one of my "foodie" professors, so I am definitely sharing it with you.

Pinchos

Pinchos are mainly represented by bread with some toppings and multiple layers, therefore the bread is simply pierced with a toothpick. These are similar to canapes, so to speak "one bites".

The price can vary from 1,5- 4€/piece and usually, restaurants offer as well a variety of different kinds.

Casa Lola Uncibay
@barboracintava96
This restaurant became one my favorites because of its huge variety of delicious tapas and foremost pinchos. Must try in the city.

La Taberna del Pintxo Larios
@barboracintava96
The restaurant is well-known for its amazing pinchos. The cold ones are ready for your self-service, as on the contrary the different warm pinchos are being offered to you by the waiter every 5-10 minutes at your table. And it is up to you whether you want some or not, At the end all cups/plates and toothpicks are counted and you pay for what you have chosen,

Paella

Paella originates from Valencia, but it is usually prepared across most of Spain, especially in coastal areas. The main ingredients are rice, tomatoes, peppers, broth, and either chicken, seafood, fish, or a mixture of all. Paella is usually decorated with lemon quarters for a final touch just right before serving.

Tasca láska
@barboracintava96
We could have not missed this restaurant, as it is owned by Slovak lady Zuzka. She has already mastered the recipes and is preparing excellent paellas of different kinds. Morever, we have tried the tapas, and honestly sooo yummy!!!

Fish

You cannot miss the opportunity to try the local fish. The typical restaurants which are located just a few meters from the sea are called Chiringuitos. The best restaurants based on multiple feedback are those in part of Málaga which is called El Palo.

The dish that is very typical is called Espeto - grilled skewer of mainly sardines. That is sth you should try by the sea among other specialties from the grill.

We have tried their delicious Pil Pil prawns, tuna tartar (which they serve with pineapple on the top- quite interesting), and fried calamari.

Panaderías

While strolling around the city, I assure you you will at least once be enchanted with the amazing smell of local bakery shops. These places are called the Panaderías.

I definitely recommend stopping by and try some local or (in general) Spanish pastries, sweet or salty ones. The one typical for Malaga is a sweet little pastry with orange colour frosting which is called "Loca", quite sweet but indeed delicious.

Here are some places that we've tried.

La Canasta
@barboracintava96
A chain of an amazing variety of pastries of a different kind. Good coffee is a must.

Churros

Churros are typical of Spain and Portugal, but you can find them in general in all countries where the Spanish visited during their history of conquest.

Churro is a Deep-fried choux pastry (Flour, water, butter, eggs, salt) of a semi-sweet taste which is usually served with a cup of chocolate for dipping in. Must try for people who like sweets

Quiosco Churrería Antonio Martín
@barboracintava96
This little stand is definitely the best place to try Churros in Málaga for a reasonable price. Is located just 8-10 minutes by bus from the very centre. The price for one churro is 0,5€ + cup of chocolate for 1,5€. Very fresh and local.
