Things to do and see

Below is a great shortlist of places to visit whilst you're in Skopje.

Please feel free to get in touch to discuss which places may suit your interests or for a tailored day-by-day itinerary to ensure you maximise your time in Skopje.

Macedonia Square
@suitcase_squirrell
Probably the most photographed area in Skopje, this place is huge. There are lots of sculptures and beautiful buildings nearby. You will find the famous Alexander the Great statute here. A lot of free walking tours start from here and I would recommend doing one (I went with Free Skopje Walking Tours and it did not disappoint)

Skopje Fortress
@suitcase_squirrell
The Skopje Fortress, commonly referred to as Kale, is a historic fortress. Dominating the skyline of Skopje, this Game of Thrones–worthy, 6th-century AD Byzantine (and later, Ottoman) fortress is an easy walk up from the Čaršija and its ramparts offer great views over the city and river. Inside the ruins, two mini museums were being built at the time of writing to house various archaeological finds from Neolithic to Ottoman times.

Matka Canyon
@suitcase_squirrell
This will easily be the highlight of your trip and is worth the journey! You can do boat trips, kayaking, hiking - you choose. Everything is very reasonably priced too. I would recommend taking a boat from the canyon to the cave - it's only 500 denar (and you can go inside the cave). Be aware that there are two companies that offer boat trips down the Canyon. Book with the SECOND COMPANY which is next situated next to the Church as this trip stops in middle of the Canyon so you can visit a cave.

Old Bazaar
@suitcase_squirrell
There is so much to do here it's easy to spend as long or as little as you like. It's the second largest bazaar in Europe. Lots of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants - there is so much to choose from! I would recommend exploring here both day and night.

Mother Theresa Memorial House
@suitcase_squirrell
There are two seperate things to see here: 1. Mother Theresa's House - there isn't actually a house but instead a plaque as the house got destroyed in the earthquake. 2. The museum of Mother Teresa which actually holds a lot of information about her.

Vodno Hill
@suitcase_squirrell
Now you have two options to get to the top of Vodno Hill: 1. Car/bus to the cable car station (the no.25 bus is free at weekends and the car cable ticket is 100 denar return). 2. Hike! You will find the Vodno Cross once at the top and the views are breathtaking!

Where to eat and drink

All of my recommendations below have been tried so I can guarantee you will not be disappointed with visit a to all or any of these places.

Staro Skupi
@suitcase_squirrell
This was my favourite place to eat at in Skopje! The food is extremely reasonably priced. We had the traditional breadsticks and Shopska salad to start, following by a meat platter which we asked our waitress to put together with a selection of traditional meats and sides. All that, plus a dessert and a beer was only £10!

Debar Maalo
@suitcase_squirrell
Another fantastic place to eat for traditional Macedonian food with traditional live music being played too.

Silbo
@suitcase_squirrell
It may not look like much from the outside but this is a brilliant place for breakfast. The cheese and meat in bread is a traditional breakfast which they sell here and will set you back just £1!
