Dubrovnik on a Backpacker's Budget

Dubrovnik on a Backpacker's Budget

Issy Tucker
I fell in love with this city last year and it breaks my heart I couldn't visit again in 2023. Nevertheless, I am here to share with you my favourite things to do, eat, where to stay, etc! I was lucky enough to meet a local (sailor) so he showed me what locals ate and also took me out on a sunset cruise to the Blue Caves. If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones (GOT), then you’re in the right city! There are plenty of filming locations here that you will recognise, as well as on nearby Lokrum island. There are several different walking tours through the old town, including GOT themed ones. "How long do I need?" Answer: "4 nights at leeeeassst!"

Day Trip Ideas

Lokrum
@isabelletucker
I visited the Lokrum on my most recent trip to Croatia and loved my day there. It is a short ferry trip from Dubrovnik Old Port for 150kn (local currency, about 30aud) return. There were plenty of beautiful different swimming spots, including one called the Dead Sea. This was a water hole that has such a high salt content that you just float in the water, even easier than other waters in the Mediterranean.

Buža Bar
@isabelletucker
A perfect place for afternoon drinks and swim, after sweating it out in the town. It can be fairly difficult to find, but so worth it once you get there. Great for thrill seekers too as there are many different heights of cliff to jump into the water from!

Activities

Free Spirit Tours - Dubrovnik free walking tour and other tours
@isabelletucker
They have these free walking tours all over Croatia and it is a great thing to do when you first arrive in a city, to get your bearings but also the history of the town. There are GOT specific tours as well if that is your thing

Dubrovnik Wall Walk
@isabelletucker
A fairly expensive activity but very worthwhile. You get so many incredible views (and picture ops) on this walk!

Foods to try:

- The Cevapi (sausage in flatbread, Croatian yiros)

- Beef burek and the kefir (plain yoghurt). Yes, it sounds weird but it’s what the locals eat. It is a thin meat pastry and you eat it while drinking the yoghurt. It tastes a lot better than it sounds, trust me!

Thank you! :)
