1. Christmas markets 🎄

Get to know the Swedish holiday traditions by visiting one of the many Christmas markets. Savor Swedish seasonal delicacies, browse through charming handicrafts and Christmas decorations, and why not buy a Christmas gift or two? I'm sure there is a Christmas market to suit your taste: the city offers traditional markets, ones in castles and others organized by arts and design students. Here are a few favorites:

2. Follow the lights! ✨

Nobel Week Lights, is a free cultural experience that illuminates Stockholm during the darkest time of the year. International and local artists create light installations inspired by Nobel laureates, offering a unique perspective on the city's urban environment and the achievements of the honorees. Or, explore the city with Stockholmsjul. The City of Stockholm Christmas decorates over 40 streets and squares with Christmas lighting. Download the map here and let the explorations begin.

3. Go local and try Julbord

Dive into the festive spirit of Christmas with the Swedish tradition of Julbord. A lavish Christmas buffet that brings together a variety of traditional dishes, from meatballs to herring, gravlax to sausages, and a tempting array of sweets like saffron buns and gingerbread cookies, it's a true feast for the senses. Make sure to end the feast with the special Christmas drink, glögg (mulled wine).

While many Swedes enjoy it at home with family, the tradition extends to gatherings with friends, extended family, or colleagues throughout November and December. So, when in Stockholm during the holidays, don't miss out on this delicious and authentic Swedish experience. Here are some favorite spots 🥂

Ulriksdals Värdshus - Locally produced & classic flavors in innovative ways.

Hallwyska - Classic julbord in a magical setting.

4. Keep it old & charming

Wander through the cobblestone streets of Gamla Stan, adorned with twinkling lights and festive decorations. Alternatively, dive deep into Swedish history at Skansen - the open-air museum comes alive with traditional Christmas markets, activities, and, of course, treats like 'glögg.' Or take advantage of the wintry waters of Mälaren with a boat ride in the city's beautiful archipelago.
