V15E13: Into the Uintas with Lifestyle Overland
Christopher Shontz
In this week’s episode, Shannon and I kick things off in the backcountry of eastern Utah, and wander north into the Uinta Mountains, where I do some exploring with Kevin from Lifestyle Overland. This board features three of the remote campsites that we enjoyed, in addition to a lovely campground we stayed at in Durango, Colorado.

Sandstone Canyon near I-70
@venture4wd
Just a short distance north on I-70, in eastern Utah, near Green River, there is a long and winding BLM road into a barren, mountainous desert landscape. There are a few other boondocking options along the well-groomed dirt road, but this one sat perched at the mouth of a canyon, flanked by ornate sandstone rock formations. It’s a primitive site with a neglected stone fire ring. Enough room for two or three vehicles and poor cell service. It’s quiet, private, and features sweeping views of the valley to the south. It is van accessible and is a great spot to spend the night if traveling cross-country, near Moab, but far enough away from Moab to avoid the congestion.

Wooded Campsite by the Sink
@venture4wd
While exploring Ashley National Forest in northern Utah, we discovered a deep sink with two gated mineshafts. The campsite is located at the end of a primitive forest road, adjacent to the sink, in a densely wooded area, flanked by hills on all sides. The road demands high-clearance four-wheel drive, and there is enough room at the campsite for two vehicles. There is a stone fire ring here, audible waterfalls, and the terrain is suitable for very small ground tents. No cell service. Very lovely setting in the southern Uinta Mountains that is well-protected from the elements. This was my favorite campsite from the week. Very serene. Recommended.

Dispersed Site at Swift Creek
@venture4wd
This dispersed site in Ashley National Forest is located off of a well-groomed forest road, in a spacious grassy field with a stone fire ring, flanked by trees and rows of aspens. A swiftly moving creek is a short walk down the hill, and the rapids are audible from camp. It is probably a popular spot in the southern Uinta Mountains during the summer, since it’s free and easily accessible. There are forest service campgrounds and hiking opportunities nearby. Despite good accessibility for any vehicle, it’s a long drive to get here from the nearest town. During our stay, someone had fashioned a makeshift swing in one of the trees near the fire ring. No cell service, and enough room for several vehicles, but there is a gentle slope, so leveling may be required.

Durango Campground…
Oasis RV Resort & Cottages Durango
@venture4wd
If you’re in a van or RV, and you’re looking for a place to stay in Durango proper, this place is top choice. It’s open year round with laundry, showers, wifi, and full hook-ups. Sites are gravel and range from tent to big-rig. We got a 30 amp with water site, since the Revel doesn’t need sewer, saved a few bucks. It’s very charming, clean, friendly and well-kept. It used to be a KOA, I believe. It takes about 15 minutes to get into town and it’s about 10 minutes from the Durango airport. We enjoy our stays here.
