Unique Sights in Prague's New Town

Unique Sights in Prague's New Town

An interesting walk through the New Town of Prague, featuring unique locations with short historic information and helpful suggestions and advice. About 1-1.5 hours of walking from end to end, you should plan around 2-3 hours if you like to stop often for snacks, shopping, selfies, etc :)

New Town is a neighborhood with a ton of fascinating history going back over 600 years, and full of architectural gems spanning across the centuries.

As you follow the guide, you may find yourself getting hungry at one moment or another. I have a free guide to places to eat and drink in New Town that will compliment this DIY walking tour very nicely.

You can start the tour from anywhere convenient, but if you'd like to follow the tour from end to end, I suggest visiting each place in the order it is laid out below, or backwards :)

Náměstí Republiky (Republic Square)
@melaniemallory
Mel says: Big square in New Town, here you will find a large shopping mall (Palladium, look for the big pink facade) and the Museum of Communism (located above the Billa supermarket)

Obecní Dům (Municipal House)
@melaniemallory
Mel says: Art nouveau concert hall with gorgeous architecture, built in the 1910s. The first president of the First Republic of Czechoslovakia announced the start of the new nation, when he stood on the large balcony on Oct 28 1918. They named the square Republic Square thereafter. The balcony is below a mosaic artwork featuring a woman in a red dress, a legendary prophetess and founder of the old Czech royal family, Princess Libuše. Inside you can see classical music performances, or the restaurant with interior designs of famous Czech painter Alfons Mucha (the restaurant is very beautiful and historic but expensive, average food, and bad service). Underground is an art nouveau bar.

Prašná brána (Powder Gate)
@melaniemallory
Mel says: Gothic tower gate built in the 15th century to be a grand a decorative entrance from the newly built New Town into the Old Town. The two cities were historic rivals and this other is the only remaining part of the walls of Old Town that remains intact above ground. The name of the tower today is Powder Gate because in the 18th century they used it to store gun powder.

Na Příkopě ("On the moat" Street)
@melaniemallory
Mel says: The street is named Na Příkopě meaning, "on the moat" as this was indeed where the moat outside the walls of Old Town once was. The walls of Old Town used to be where there is now a long line of buildings containing residences, stores, and shopping malls. This street connects Republic Square to the low (north) end of Wenceslas Square. At Wenceslas Square, go into the Mustek metro station (the stairs down are found behind the New Yorker clothing store) to see a 14th century archaeological remnant of a little bridge that used to cross over the aforementioned moat. The station is named "Mustek," the Czech word for 'little bridge,' as it was discovered when they were building the station in the 1970s.
