RB2 Vereda do Nateiro (AKA the Banana route)

Often referred to as the "Banana Route," this charming hike offers a unique glimpse into the everyday life of Madeira’s agricultural communities. The trail winds through vibrant banana plantations, where you’ll likely encounter local farmers tending to their crops. The route is relatively easy, making it perfect for a relaxing walk. Along the way, you can stop to admire the terraced fields that cascade down towards the sea, with the Atlantic providing a stunning backdrop. Don’t forget your camera—the contrast of bright green banana trees against the deep blue ocean is postcard-worthy. Also, keep an eye out for small fruit stands where locals sell freshly harvested bananas!

Fanal forest (Witch tree forest)

Welcome to Fanal Forest, a place straight out of a fantasy novel! This mist-covered laurel forest is one of Madeira’s hidden gems. The twisted, ancient trees seem to have personalities of their own, and when the fog rolls in, the entire forest feels magical—hence the nickname "Witch Tree Forest." If you’re lucky, you might spot a Madeiran chaffinch darting through the trees, adding to the enchantment. The forest has plenty of peaceful spots to sit, reflect, and take in the eerie but beautiful atmosphere. A fun tip: If you’re into photography, this is a paradise, especially on a misty day when the forest takes on an otherworldly glow.

TIP: Look for the witch tree, it's fun to look for and makes you feel like alice in wonderland (but a spooky version)

DEFINITELY go before sunrise as to not miss the mist and fog.

Achadas da cruz

Achadas da Cruz is the place to go if you want to experience Madeira’s more remote and wild side. The adventure starts with a thrilling cable car ride down to a secluded coastal area, where the Atlantic crashes against rugged cliffs. Once you reach the bottom, you can hike through this peaceful, almost untouched landscape. The views of the ocean and the dramatic coastline are stunning. It’s an excellent spot for anyone looking to escape the crowds and enjoy a more rugged, authentic side of the island. Be sure to pack a lunch—there’s no better place for a picnic with a view than this hidden corner of Madeira.

NOW: note that most people take the ''teleferico'' and i suggest most people should as it is quite steep.
