The Practicalities

When to Go

Aim for the shoulder seasons (April, May, September, and October) for good weather but fewer people and more affordable prices.

Getting Around

Tickets are generally free for children under 4 on public transportation within Paris (metro, RER, bus); under 10s pay half price. Some metro stations have gates, in addition to the turnstiles, making it easier to get a pushchair onto the metro. Simply swipe your ticket as normal, then head to the gate and press the button - you can say, "J'ai une poussette” (I have a pushchair), and they will let you through. If there is no gate, you will have to go through the turnstiles. Either fold up your pushchair, or ask someone for help. Few stations have lifts/elevators, so you will need to navigate the escalator… or more likely the stairs. You will almost always find someone happy to help if you need assistance. Metro Line 14, a driverless line that is also the newest, is the only line in the network to be fully accessible. Buses are much easier to get on and off with a pushchair!

Transport Passes

There are two main transportation passes in Paris. If you plan to use a lot of public transport, they are usually cheaper than buying individual tickets.

- Navigo Découverte Travel Card. Less expensive but can only be bought at a ticket office in 7-day increments starting on the Monday of each week. You need to bring a small passport size photo to stick to the card.
