Day Trip Near St George

Thisday itinerary goes out into the desert in Hurricane, UT then just over the border in Arizona. You can spend a much time as you want at each site. The order of sites is such that you make as little back tracking as possible and save time on driving.

The roads are dirt and gravel. You may not want to venture out there if it has very recently rained or there is rain in the forecast. None of these places really have any cover from the sun.

Things to bring

• drinks

• picnic lunch

• sunscreen, hats, jacket, sunglasses (etc. according to weather)

• sturdy shoes

Tips and feedback in blog post for this itinerary.

Warner Valley Dinosaur Tracks

On your way to the Dinosaur Tracks you'll reach a spot with rocks where people take a rest and sometimes camp. This is called the boneyard and can be seen on Google maps.

No bathroom, water or utilities.

There is a round parking area at the start of the trail, it's all sand. Take the trail and after a few short minutes of walking you'll reach the Tracks and an information sign. You can walk further if you want. The trail keeps going off into the desert but there are no more Dino tracks besides the main ones near the sign.

Little Black Mountain Petroglyphs

You have to go around the little mountain/hill to reach this spot. Our first time we went the wrong way. I updated the Google maps location though to make it clear where you should go!

"Bathrooms" here.

You'll need Google maps to get here. It's across the border in a Arizona. There is a big sign letting you know you've arrived. There are picnic tables and caibo's to relieve yourself. The best petroglyphs are up the trail and to the right. You can explore all over the hillside though.

Glitter Mountain

Saved for last! By the time you make it here you may not want to walk around much anyways. So it's fun to just look around on the ground for some nice pieces of gypsum before going back to town.

If you are really into rock hounding you may want to bring a shovel. It's a well picked over place but there is an abundance of rocks to find with minimal effort.

If you plan on taking pieces of gypsum, be sure to read the big sign that outlines cost for quantities. You can easily venmo for what you take when you have cell reception. Tip: take a picture of the sign

I believe strongly in taking advantage of your surroundings and getting to know the area you live in. I love to curate content and materials based on places I know well and have been to myself. I am also an artist and mom. So I love to travel outdoors a lot, be in beautiful spaces, and teach my kids from a young age to enjoy and adapt to these things as well. I think most travel can be "family" travel and that our dream trips can include our kids. But also trips without kids are an absolutely treat!
