Auckland's MÄori Name:
TÄmaki Makaurau is the MÄori name for Auckland and translates to "land desired by many."
Pronunciation:

Population:
Auckland has a population of approximately 1.7 million people, making it the largest city in New Zealand. It is one of the most culturally diverse cities in New Zealand, with over 200 ethnicities represented and nearly 40% of its residents born overseas.
History:
Auckland was established as a colonial settlement in 1840 and became the capital of New Zealand before Wellington. It has a rich history influenced by both MÄori culture and British colonialism.
Geography:
Auckland is located on between two harboursāWaitematÄ Harbor and Manukau Harbor. It is built on approximately 53 volcanic cones, with the most prominent being Mount Eden and Rangitoto Island. Some of these volcanoes are dormant, and several are now popular walking and sightseeing spots.

Walking:
Auckland is a port that, no matter which port you dock at, you can just walk off the ship and you're right in the heart of the city.
Public Transport:
Aucklandās public transport system includes buses, trains, and ferries that depart from Britomart and the downtown ferry terminal, both close to the port.

Hop-on hop-off buses operate from the waterfront. This is the easiest way to get around many sightseeing stops.

* Waiheke Island
Waiheke is famous for its wineries, beaches and scenic trails.Ā The ferry from Auckland to Waiheke Island takes about 35-45 minutes. Ferries run frequently from the Auckland Ferry Terminal, which is close to the cruise port.
