Auckland Information

Auckland's Māori Name:

Tāmaki Makaurau is the Māori name for Auckland and translates to "land desired by many."

Pronunciation:

Tāmaki: Tah-mah-kee

Makaurau: Mah-koh-rau

Population:

Auckland has a population of approximately 1.7 million people, making it the largest city in New Zealand. It is one of the most culturally diverse cities in New Zealand, with over 200 ethnicities represented and nearly 40% of its residents born overseas.

Auckland was established as a colonial settlement in 1840 and became the capital of New Zealand before Wellington. It has a rich history influenced by both Māori culture and British colonialism.

How to Get Around Auckland from the Cruise Port

Walking:

Auckland is a port that, no matter which port you dock at, you can just walk off the ship and you're right in the heart of the city.

Public Transport:

Aucklandā€™s public transport system includes buses, trains, and ferries that depart from Britomart and the downtown ferry terminal, both close to the port.

Uber & Taxis:

Taxis and ride-shares like Uber are also readily available.

Hop-on-hop-off Bus:

Hop-on hop-off buses operate from the waterfront. This is the easiest way to get around many sightseeing stops.
