Famara, Lanzarote
Famara Bungalows
As you approach the coast, you will see the cliffs or Riscos de Famara and the Famara Bungalows on your right hand side. Built originally between the late 1960s and early 1970s, these semi circular homes were styled on the "zocos" of the La Geria wine growing region of the island. Zocos are the half round volcanic stone walls designed to protect the vines from the prevailing north east wind. Developed by Norwegian families and by collaboration of both Spanish and Norwegian architects, they are quite often referred to as the Norwegian Bungalows. These days , the development is a mix of privately ownerd and holiday homes. The village, La Caleta de Famara, is approximately 1.5km by car or a 25 minute walk along the beach .
Caleta de Famara
The village , La Caleta de Famara, with its spectacular views to la Graciosa island and towards the Riscos de Famara is a magical little place. Its white dwellings with blue painted windows and doors is a nod to its humble fishing village beginnings. Most of the roads are still sand with fishermen's boats dotted haphazardly around . Life is much more laid back here compared to the glossy resorts on the west and south coast but likewise, Famara has grown in popularity in the last few years and is now quite a buzzy place to be especially as a surf destination. As you enter the vilage along the beach road, the first development of apartments on your left is the newer part of the village, La Hoya. Coming into Caleta itself you will see the popular La Mar Cafe straight ahead on the corner and opposite, the village bus stop. Driving down the main street you will see the majority of the surf schools where you can take surf courses, hire boards and wetsuits. The harbour or "muelle" has its own little beach overlooked by the small village church of the Sacred Heart of Mary. This is where the Fiesta is held at the end of August , beginning of September every year. Walk along from the harbour and you will reach a small sea pool , known locally as the "Charquito"; great for families with small children.
