Mostnice Gorge: A day in hidden Gem in Slovenia
Where is Mostnice Gorge?
Mostnice Gorge (Slovenian: Korita Mostnice) is nestled in the serene Upper Bohinj Valley, near the picturesque village of Stara Fužina in Slovenia. It lies within the Triglav National Park, offering visitors a pristine escape into nature's wonders. Just a short distance from Lake Bohinj, it’s one of the most accessible yet enchanting destinations in the region.
How to Get There?
🚙By Car:
Drive to Stara Fužina, which is about 80 kilometres from Ljubljana (around a 1.5-hour drive). Parking is available at the trailhead in Stara Fužina (1 h = 3 €; August 2024). You can pay parking by CARD.
🚃By Public Transport:
Take a bus to Bohinj (Lake Bohinj area) and walk approximately 15 minutes to the starting point.
🚶🏼♀️Trail to the Gorge:
From Stara Fužina, follow the well-marked path that leads along the Mostnica River. The trail is easy to moderate, making it perfect for families and casual hikers.
Why is Mostnice Gorge Special?
Geological Wonders:
The gorge's vivid turquoise water owes its colour to dissolved minerals and glacial runoff. It’s a living reminder of the glacial and karstic processes that shaped Slovenia’s Alpine landscapes.
Biological Richness:
Triglav National Park is a biodiversity hotspot, and Mostnice Gorge is no exception. The moist environment around the gorge supports a variety of mosses, ferns, and wildflowers, creating a lush green backdrop.
You might spot endemic alpine species, such as the Alpine salamander (Salamandra atra) or the delicate Edelweiss flower. Birds like the white-throated dipper (Cinclus cinclus) dart along the river, while the surrounding forest is home to roe deer and red squirrels.
Tranquillity and Accessibility:
Unlike some of Slovenia’s more crowded natural attractions, Mostnice Gorge is a quieter spot. Its accessibility from Bohinj and the gentle hike make it ideal for families and anyone looking to connect with nature.

❗Trail details
The Mostnice Gorge trail is rated as easy to moderate, making it suitable for most visitors, including families with children and casual hikers. Here’s what to expect:
1️⃣Distance:
The round-trip trail through the gorge to Voje Valley is approximately 10 km (6 miles). The walk through the gorge itself is shorter, about 3.5 km one way.
Details you can see here, I use an app Mapy.cz for hiking:
2️⃣Elevation Gain:
The trail has a gentle elevation gain of around 100 metres, which is manageable for beginners.
3️⃣Path Conditions:
The paths are well-marked and maintained, but parts of the trail can be uneven or slippery, especially near the gorge, due to damp rocks and moss.
4️⃣Hiking Time:
The full loop, including the gorge and Voje Valley, takes around 2-3 hours, depending on your pace and the time spent enjoying the scenery.
5️⃣Temperature:
We went hiking in August (2024) and it was lovely 25°C. Also, one time we went in the winter, couple of years ago. Entrance was FREE, snow was everywhere and whole trail wasn't cleaned but for the first 500 m it was magical🥰
Tips for Hiking Mostnice Gorge:
❗Wear sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots with good grip.
🍶Bring water and snacks, especially if continuing to the Voje Valley.
☝🏼Watch your step near the gorge edges, especially if travelling with children.
😍Take your time to enjoy the viewpoints, bridges, and unique rock formations.
Make the Most of Your Visit:
➡️ Combine your trip with a hike to the Voje Valley and its idyllic alpine meadows.
➡️ Visit in spring or autumn when the water levels are higher, enhancing the gorge’s beauty.
➡️ Bring sturdy shoes and a camera—you’ll want to capture the interplay of water, rock, and light.
Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, geology buff, or simply someone seeking tranquillity, Mostnice Gorge is a must-see jewel of Slovenia.
