When you head north from Reykjavík, it doesn't take long to leave the Capital Region and enter West Iceland. The city immediately feels very far away. This area is home to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and Snæfellsjökull National Park. It's filled with sleeping volcanoes, receding glaciers, thundering waterfalls, lupine-covered valleys, small fishing villages, black churches, and isolated lighthouses. There's a lot to see within relatively short driving distances. It's a good place to start your real Icelandic adventure. This guide is a detailed 10 day itinerary with an interactive map showing over 80 locations that we visited on our road trip; months of preparation and planning went into the creation of this. The travel locations include destinations around the Ring Road, locations in the Snæfellsnes peninsula/ Snæfellsjökull National Park, as well as Landmannalauger in the Icelandic highlands. You can either choose a budget version with camping or be more comfortable with apartments on the way. For example, if you were to travel with a friend the cheapest option would be renting 4x4 and camping with your own tents. I coordinated and lead an adventure tour here recently and it is honestly one of the most beautiful and magical destinations I have ever been to. In this guide I share my top recommendations for Icelandic accommodation, divided into budget categories. If you only have a few days and aren't planning to move around much further than the golden circle, or if you won't have access to your own car, my advice would be to stay in Reykjavik for most of your nights and do day trip tours with a stay somewhere special out in the countryside for 1 or 2 nights as a treat. Iceland doesn't have good public transport links outside of the capital so you really have two options, book onto a tour or it's one of the best places to do a self drive adventure.
