Hi, I'm Maëlys and I've always had a passion for travel. From a very young age, I've been immersed in the world of travel. Following my studies in the tourism sector and my ever-increasing desire to leave home, I decided to take the plunge into the unknown in 2022. I set off with my rucksack to Central America, with nothing planned and travelling solely by public transport. All in all, 8 months of travelling, 6 countries crossed, a few voluntary jobs and a lot of memories. Since then, I've also visited some of Europe's capital cities and I don't intend to stop there. The words that define me: are spontaneous, adventurous, thirsty for discovery, enthusiastic and always on the go. Travelling is a passion that allows me to discover the beauty of the whole world and the different cultures that inhabit it, as well as meet incredible people along the way. The idea for this blog and travel planner was born during my travels. I noticed that on the one hand, I had a lot of questions about travelling alone, especially as a woman, and on the other, I had a lot of tourist-related questions about where to go and what to visit, so I decided to launch Maelys' Travels to bring it all together. I work part-time for a German Travel Company as a Tourguide which organizes group travels, itineraries and activities. My travel style is solo female, group travel, low-budget, backpacker friendly and adventurous, that includes camping in the mountains or at beautiful beaches, doing sporty activities, exploring vibrant city nightlife and get to know locals with their food and culture. When I plan a trip, I love to research a lot, to be prepared for any kind of situation and also not to miss out on an amazing opportunity. I love surfing and often travel to test different beaches and spots. Our environment and nature is very important for me and I would always opt for slow and sustainable travel when possible. To most of the places in Europe I went by train or bus, so I know a lot of hacks and routes for this form of transport. I also don't eat meat, so testing all countries for their veggie foodie heavens!

I like to visit off the tourist trail destinations, or if I do visit more popular destinations I like to do so as responsibly & sustainably as possible. I grew up in the Netherlands, lived in the UK for 16 years, and have lived in Marseille, France, for the last 4 years. Trip planning, is something I enjoy doing for myself, as well as for my family and friends, and is something I pride myself in. I mostly travel solo & once I get to my destination, I rely on public transport and overland travel as opposed to flying, where possible. Learning about the local culture & supporting local economies is important to me so I try and stay at either locally-owned guesthouses, homestays, or sustainable boutique hotels, and avoid big chain hotels or Airbnb. I also love looking for local vegan food wherever I go.
