In particular, I love getting the feel of a city, living how the locals live and finding unknown hidden food gems. My style of travel can be described as "slow" and "easy-going". I don't enjoy checking off attractions like a checklist and that it is a must to visit everything in a set location. Rather than feel rushed, I'll selectively pick specific attractions; sometimes out of obligation of "did you really go to ___, if you didn't see ___" but also if there is some personal interest of mine. I like being in new places more than the process of travel. Whenever I go to a new place, I like to spend some time there so that I can learn about the history and the culture. The best case scenario is to make local friends so that you can learn about the country from their perspective. Some of my cross-cultural travel highlights include: meeting my wife (and learning French because of her) and having all of my stereotypes shattered by my Middle Eastern friends. My desire to better understand my friends and their world led me to study Arabic and attend graduate school at the School of Oriental and African Studies - University of London where I learned about the history and politics of the modern Middle East. Hi Thatchers, I’m a 24 yr old who started travelling as a teenager. From working my first job as a cashier as a teenager and saving everything to pay for a trip to India at 15, I have now travelled 9 countries, predominantly solo, and about to embark on an epic journey around SE Asia both solo and with some friends. When asked where my favourite place in the world I have to say the airplane and airports. I love the sense of unknown and the challenges that go with a different place. In my down time I enjoy being a nanny and studying my Masters in Teaching. I have loved exploring most of Eastern Australia from Rocky down to Tassie and out to the Desert at Birdsville. We are seasoned travelers who have been to over 50 countries. But we hate checking boxes and we are not trying to hit all the major attractions. If you want to run from the Louvre to the Eiffel Tower to Notre Dame, we may not be the right guide for you. If you want to hit up the Hard Rock Cafe in Yerevan on a Thursday to watch a Filipino cover band play Nirvana, then I think you’ll like our style. We know we’re all strapped for time and it’s hard to really get to know a place in 7-10 days, but we are firm believers that it is possible. In our travels we try to seek out those places where you will catch a slice of local life. Where you will look around you and think to yourself, “I am a long way from home.” We love that feeling and even if you’ve never had that opportunity, we think when you feel it you will fall in love with travel too. Hi, I'm Jaya. I backpack full time around the world, always on a carefully curated budget. Somehow, I end up with loads of free accommodation, in rural areas of countries with locals, at festivals with a free wristband or travelling an entire country in a van for next to nothing. How I get through most of my trips is a shock to even me, but I always pull through with some of the most amazing experiences. I've been trying to figure out how I can best help others begin their travel journey, spend less or have a smoother ride. Thatch fell right in my lap and I couldn't be more thrilled to test this out! I want to be available for personally curated travel advice, for trip tips / guides to cities you've never been. If you need budget help I'm all over crunching numbers (weirdo, I know). I just have so many conversations with friends in my orbit, and I know in my heart I can help some others out there. Some highlights of my trips I'd love to share tips on; I flew from Australia to Europe for $360aud. I travelled in a van from north to south Portugal for $300aud for a whole week. I've volunteered in rural Indonesia teaching a muslim community English, I donated $90aud and I had free accommodation, transport and food for the entire 10 day stay. I managed to get 7 weeks free accommodation across a European Summer one year & saved thousands of dollars. I also want to mention, I'm a massive advocate for dining out, good coffee and good wine. I'm not much of a shopper, but will buy something if my wardrobe wouldn't survive without it (vintage, yes please!) I do travel very light with a 30L backpack that covered me for 5 months straight, & I still haven't seen the brand go viral yet? Everything I've learnt feels far too good to gate keep. So here I am ready to put it all on the table just for you.
